ARE WE GOOD YEAST?

Mark 8: 14-21

He gave them strict orders: watch out and be on your guard for the yeast of the Pharisees as well as the yeast of Herod.

Jesus takes his teachings from the events of daily life. In this text he gives a lesson about the kind of yeast that we should avoid being. Yeast, a commonly used element, is simple, but it can ferment the bread dough for good or for bad.

In the symbolic sense, a good or bad yeast within the community can either enrich or spoil. Jesus tells his disciples to avoid being the kind of yeast that the Pharisees and Herodians are. In the Pharisees the bad yeast could be hypocrisy and legalism, and in the Herodians, superficiality and the desire for power. What is the yeast within us that affects all we say and do?

When we are fermented with the yeast of Jesus, within our hearts are faith and love, all is transformed by this yeast, making the community a special place of healing and reconciliation. The community is healthy bread that satiates the hunger for peace and comfort.

Prayer: Lord, help us to remove the yeast of rancor, envy and selfishness from our lives. Leven our lives with the yeast of your love. Amen.

¿SOMOS BUENA LEVADURA?

Marcos 8: 14-21

Mirad, guardaos de la levadura de los fariseos, y de la levadura de Herodes.

Jesús obtiene las enseñanzas de los eventos de la vida diaria, en el texto les da una lección sobre la levadura que deben evitar ser. La levadura, elemento de uso común, sencillo, pero que puede hacer fermentar la masa del pan para bien o para mal.

En sentido simbólico una buena o mala levadura, dentro de la comunidad, la puede enriquecer o estropear. Jesús les dice a sus discípulos que eviten ser la levadura que son los fariseos y Herodes. En los fariseos la levadura mala podía ser la hipocresía, el legalismo, en Herodes la superficialidad, los deseos de poder. ¿Cuál es la levadura que hay dentro de nosotros que afecta todo lo decimos y hacemos?

Cuando somos fermentados por la levadura de Jesús, dentro nuestro hay fe y amor, todo queda transformado por esa levadura que hace que la comunidad sea un espacio de sanidad, reconciliación. La comunidad es pan saludable que sacia el hambre de paz y consuelo.

Oración: Señor ayúdanos a sacar de nuestras vidas la levadura del rencor, la envidia y el egoísmo. Leuda nuestras vidas con la levadura de tu amor. Amén.
