THE MEANING OF THE CROSS IN OUR LIFE

Mark 8:34-39

After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them,“All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me.”

The Romans, Mark’s original audience, knew what it meant to carry a cross. Crucifixion was a form of execution used by the Romans in the cases of dangerous criminals. The prisoner carried his cross to the place of execution, demonstrating submission to the power of Rome.

Speaking of carrying the cross, Jesus wanted to show what would be required to follow him. To follow him moment after moment requires heroic effort and doing his will even in the difficult times when the future seems uncertain.

Jesus wants us to decide to follow him in place of leading a life of sin and self-satisfaction. He wants us to stop trying to control our lives and to let him take control. He asks us to submit our will, not self contempt; he asks us to remove ourselves from egocentrism that tells us that we know better than God how to conduct our lives.

Prayer: Beloved Father, allow us to continue serving you despite the weight of our crosses, always looking for your will, because we trust in your great love and mercy. Amen.

SIGNIFICADO DE LA CRUZ EN NUESTRA VIDA

Marcos 8:34-39

Luego Jesús llamó a sus discípulos y a la gente, y dijo: Si alguno quiere ser discípulo mío, olvídese de sí mismo, cargue con su cruz y sígame.

Los romanos, la audiencia original de Marcos, sabían lo que significa cargar con una cruz. La crucifixión era una forma de ejecución usada por los romanos en los casos de criminales peligrosos. El prisionero cargaba su cruz hasta el lugar de la ejecución, con lo cual demostraba sumisión al poder de Roma.

Al hablar de llevar la cruz, Jesús quiso ilustrar el sentido de lo que se requiere para seguirle. Seguirle, momento tras momento, requiere de esfuerzo heroico y de hacer su voluntad aun en los momentos difíciles, cuando el futuro se presenta incierto.

Jesús quiere que decidamos seguirle en lugar de llevar una vida de pecado y autosatisfacción. Quiere que dejemos de tratar de controlar nuestras vidas y dejar que Él tome el control. Nos pide someter nuestra voluntad, no auto desprecio; nos pide despojarnos del egocentrismo que nos dice que sabemos mejor que Dios cómo conducir nuestras vidas.

Oración: Padre amado, permite que podamos continuar sirviéndote a pesar del peso de nuestras cruces, buscando siempre tu voluntad, porque confiamos en tu gran amor y misericordia. Amén.
