WHEN LOVE SHINES

Mark 5.1-20

When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him

Mark 5.6 (NRSV)

This text describes one who is mentally deranged; he wanders day and night. With particular physical strength, burdened with bitterness, resentments, anger, a violence in all directions which prevent others from approaching him. The neighbors’ attempts to control him by tying him up fail, and he escapes. It is quite significant that this man suffers from spiritual, mental and physical constraints, because what he finds on the side of his neighbors is also oppression, so he lives in chains where he tries to escape from everything.

In the account of the encounter between Jesus and this man, the contrast is as disproportionate as the description of the man himself. The same one who is crying out by himself in the tombs, the one who is out of control of himself and those around him, now appears prostrate at the feet of Jesus.

One might choose to recognize in the man's gesture a sane action within the internal conflict he experiences between his own self and the torment that is within him. We see a gesture of change, transformation in the face of love, in the face of the option to heal, to free.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the love which changes torment, that transforms life and makes hope grow. Amen.

CUANDO EL AMOR BRILLA

Marcos 5.1-20

Cuando vio a Jesús de lejos, corrió y se postró delante de Él;

Marcos 5.6

El texto describe a alguien que está mentalmente enajenado; de día y de noche deambula. Con una fuerza física particular, cargada de amarguras, resentimientos, ira, una violencia en todas direcciones que impide que se le acerquen. Los intentos de los vecinos de controlarle atándole resultan fallidos, se escapa. Resulta bastante significativo, este hombre sufre por causa de ataduras espirituales, mentales y físicas, pues lo que encuentra del lado de los vecinos es también opresión, entonces vive en bucles donde intenta escapar de todo.

En relato del encuentro entre Jesús y este hombre, el contraste es tan desproporcionado como la misma descripción de este. El mismo que vocifera fuera de sí por los sepulcros, aquel que está fuera del control de sí mismo y de los que le rodean, ahora aparece postrado a los pies de Jesús.

Cabría la opción de reconocer en el gesto del hombre una acción cuerda dentro del conflicto interno que vive entre su propio yo y el tormento que está en él. Un gesto del cambio, la transformación ante el amor, ante la opción de sanar, liberar.

Oración: Señor gracias por tu amor que cambia la tormenta que transforma la vida y hace crecer la esperanza. Amén.
