LISTEN TO HIS VOICE
Jeremiah 7:23-28
But I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. (NIV)
Jeremiah 7:23
The prophet Jeremiah issues a simple yet profound command: “Listen to my voice.” However, the people do not listen; they stray from the path.
The text reflects our reality: the difficulty of obedience, the temptation to forget God’s voice. “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” This phrase from Saint Augustine reveals that disobedience stems from a restless heart that seeks solace in idols and its own ways. But only the voice of God brings rest to our lives.
The voice Jeremiah proclaims is a living event. To ignore it is to close the door to the relationship that sustains life. We are called to listen to God’s voice amidst the noise and uncertainty. Faithfulness is not perfection, but humble openness to his Word. Our restlessness finds the calm and comfort that God himself brings us.
Prayer: Lord, silence within us every voice that is not yours, so that we may do your will. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
