WITHOUT LOOKING BACK

PHILIPPIANS 3:8-14

A few days ago, I was invited to preach at the anniversary worship service of a church. As always happens for such an appointed date, everything is well prepared; and in this case not even the most demanding could ask for more. But this experience would have been just one among many others without the presence of a group of brothers and sisters that formed the “Ecumenical Chorus of the Elderly” that actively participated in the celebration.

We don’t always see elderly people singing infantile hymns recalling the times of one’s childhood and reminding us that God’s world is everyone’s world. But among their hymns was an impressive one, and much more impressive by being interpreted by a group where grey hair abounded.  Perhaps the voices lacked force, but there was plenty of love and commitment to their Lord: “I love you, Lord, and do your will. I follow your way Lord, without fainting and without looking back.”

At times we think that our ailments are many, which is true; that we no longer have the same reflexes, is something that no one denies. Our time has passed. Here we respectively differ. If this choir taught us anything, it’s that time is always conducive to praising God, and with all modesty and without aspiring to a plausible prominence, to transmit this message that for decades has been preached, not with words, but with a consequent act. We must live without fainting and without looking back.    

Prayer: Thank you God for showing me the company you have with everyone at all moments of our lives. Amen.

SIN MIRAR ATRÁS

FILIPENSES 3:8-14

...olvidando ciertamente lo que queda atrás,

Hace unos días fui invitado a predicar en el culto aniversario de una Iglesia. Como siempre sucede para fecha tan señalada todo se prepara bien; y en este caso ni el más exigente podía pedir más. Pero esta experiencia hubiera sido una entre otras muchas sin la presencia de un grupo de hermanos y hermanas que formaban el “Coro Ecuménico de la Tercera Edad”, que participó activamente en la celebración.

No siempre vemos a personas mayores cantando himnos infantiles rememorando los tiempos de su niñez y recordándonos que el mundo de Dios es el mundo de todos y todas. Pero entre sus himnos había uno impresionante, y mucho más interpretado por un grupo donde abundaban canas, faltaban quizás fuerzas en la voz; pero sobraba el amor y el compromiso con su Señor: “Amarte a ti Señor, y hacer tu voluntad. Seguir tu caminar Señor, sin desmayar y no mirar atrás”. A veces pensamos que nuestros achaques son muchos, cosa que es cierta; que ya no tenemos los mismos reflejos, algo que nadie niega; que ya pasó nuestro tiempo. Aquí con todo respeto discrepamos. Si algo nos enseñó este coro es que siempre el tiempo es propicio para alabar a Dios, y con toda modestia y sin aspirar a un plausible protagonismo, transmitir este mensaje que por decenas de años han estado predicado, no con palabras, sino con un actuar consecuente. Tenemos que vivir sin desmayar y sin mirar atrás.

Oración: Gracias Dios, por mostrarme la compañía que tú tienes con todos en todos los momentos de nuestra vida. Amén.
