WE ARE ALL EQUAL FOR GOD

MATTHEW 20:1-16

The last will be first, and the first will be last. (NIV)

Mathew 20:16

The first Christians were Jews, although little by little they were adding pagans and other religions. When this gospel was written the communities had already existed for many years, but they continued incorporating new members. The most veteran among the community surely claimed privileges, because naturally, they had achieved a perfection that the newer members couldn’t.

This parable was meant to warn the Christians that having accessed the faith before the others was no privilege. This feeling of superiority was deep rooted in Jewish thought. They were the chosen and the privileged, and consequently God couldn’t treat the others as he had the obligation to treat them.

A give and take relation with God makes no sense. Work in the community of Jesus’ followers has to imitate God’s own, and to be totally selfless. God is totally available to all. Those who may have known him first have an equal value for God as those recently arrived at the vineyard, disposed to work for his kingdom.

Prayer: Help us, Father, to understand and learn that we are all your sons, and that you love us equally, whatever our faults may be. Amen.

PARA DIOS TODOS SOMOS IGUALES

MATEO 20:1-16

”…los primeros serán los últimos, y los últimos seráán los primeros”

Mateo 20:16
