Living for Justice

I Peter 2:21-24

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John 10: 11 (NRSV)

John the Evangelist presents Jesus to us as a good shepherd, one capable even of giving his life for his sheep. The text in Peter’s Epistle shows the same idea already as a theological truth: the death of Christ interpreted as sacrifice for sin, not only for pardon, but much more for a life dedicated to serving what is fair and square. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness . . . .”

Justice, righteousness, or fairness, as a concept in the Old Testament, is upright behavior that exceeds standards, for it seeks to restore any relationship that has disturbed the peace of the community. In practice this runs up against a number of difficulties, including having to bear the unjust upon oneself even when doing good; the apostle Peter acknowledges this. The first-century Christian took being fair very seriously, not as something one can claim based on one’s own criteria, but by following what God declares in His Word. Verse 21 begins by saying, “For to this you have been called . . . .”

Prayer: O God, make us your followers in every moment to do what is good and live for the fairness that comes from You. In your hands we entrust ourselves. Amen.

Vivir para la justicia

I Pedro 2:21-24
