A GIVING GOD

1 Kings 3:3-15

If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him?  (NIV)

Matthew 7:11

            Solomon had a personal and reciprocal relation with God, as expressed in this passage through his offerings. Motivated by love, Solomon sacrificed thousands of offerings to the Lord; and that same night, God appeared to the young Solomon in a dream to give him something in exchange. And, as the text chosen for today says, “God let him choose.”

            Solomon’s answer showed humility. As a new king who was trying to exercise his function, he felt young, not knowing what to do. Therefore, he asked for a understanding heart, which knew the difference between good and evil.

            God, the great giver of gifts, was pleased with Solomon. This story demonstrates God’s generosity, in that he not only gave Solomon what he asked for, but he also gave him what he asked for in abundance. Solomon came to be wiser than any other human. And God lavished additional gifts of riches and honor to Solomon. This description of God as the great giver coincides with other descriptions of generosity found in the Bible.

            The great giver loves to give good gifts. Let us, then, cultivate these values of humility and genuine love in our relations with God.

 

Prayer: thank you God for your abundant generosity; I ask you that you open my eyes to see all the gifts you make for me daily, and that at times are difficult for me to see. Amen.

UN DIOS DADIVOSO

1 Reyes 3:3-15

Pues si vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis dar buenas dádivas a vuestros hijos, ¿Cuánto más vuestro Padre que está en los cielos dará buenas cosas a los que le pidan?

Mateo 7:11

            Salomón tenía una relación personal y recíproca con Dios, expresada en este pasaje a través de sus ofrendas. Motivado por amor, Salomón sacrificó miles de ofrendas al Señor; y desde aquella misma noche, Dios apareció al joven Salomón en un sueño para darle algo a cambio. Y como dice el texto escogido para hoy,  Dios le dejó elegir.

            La respuesta de Salomón mostró humildad. Como un rey nuevo que trataba de ejercer su función, se sintió joven y no sabía qué hacer. Por eso le pidió un corazón entendido, que conociera la diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo. Dios, el gran dador de regalos, estaba complacido con Salomón. Esta historia demuestra la generosidad de Dios en que no sólo dio a Salomón lo que él le pidió, sino que tambié‚n se lo dio en abundancia. Salomón llegó a ser más sabio que cualquier otro ser humano. Y Dios prodigó regalos adicionales de riqueza y honor sobre Salomón. Esta descripción de Dios como el gran dador coincide con otras descripciones de su generosidad encontradas en la Biblia.

            Al gran dador le encanta dar buenos regalos. Cultivemos pues estos valores de humildad y amor genuino en nuestra relación con Dios.

 

Oración: Gracias Dios, por tu abundante generosidad, te pido abras mis ojos para ver todos los regalos que me haces diariamente y que a veces me cuesta ver. Amén.
