OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE

Luke 19: 1-10

The Human One came to seek and save the lost.

Luke 19: 10 (CEB)

            What lessons can we learn from the story of Zacchaeus? He was a tax collector, a servant of the Roman empire who had gotten rich by extorting the people of Israel.

            What feeling moved Zacchaeus to run and climb a tree with the goal of knowing Jesus?  It is hard to know. Nevertheless, in this story we discover actions that surprise us.  First, he climbs a tree at the risk of being considered a fool.  Second, when Jesus announces his visit, he displays great happiness.  His third action shows a radical change: he gives back a greater amount of his riches than what the law required.  Thus, he shows a real repentance—and his decision to heal the damage he had done.  Why did this happen? He has met with the Son of God, who shared with him despite the gossip of everyone else.

            What teaching does this story offer us?  Even those we consider the biggest sinners have the opportunity to repent.  A true repentance shows good works.  But we also have those who gossip, criticize and exclude, those who do not trust in the power of love.  We should be careful not to do something similar.  Jesus was not carried away with prejudice. He teaches us that we should carry the message of the gospel to all and share with all. 

 

Prayer: Lord, guide us in correcting our errors, help us to see everyone with love and to avoid prejudice and gossip.  Allow us to try to follow Jesus in his same way.  Amen.

OPORTUNIDAD PARA TODAS LAS PERSONAS

Lucas 19: 1-10

Porque el Hijo del hombre vino a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido

Lucas 19: 10

            ¿Qué lecciones podemos aprender del relato de Zaqueo? Era un cobrador de impuestos, servidor del poder romano que se había enriquecido extorsionando al pueblo de Israel.

            ¿Qué sentimiento movió a Zaqueo para correr y subirse a un árbol con el fin de conocer a Jesús? Difícil saberlo. Sin embargo, en este relato descubrimos acciones que nos sorprenden. Primero, se sube  a un árbol a riesgo de ser considerado ridículo. Segundo, cuando Jesús le anuncia su visita muestra una gran alegría. Su tercera acción muestra un cambio radical: se desprende de parte de la riqueza en mucha mayor cantidad de lo que la ley estipulaba. Muestra así un arrepentimiento real y  su decisión de  enmendar el daño que ha producido. ¿Por qué ha sucedido esto? Se ha encontrado con el Hijo de Dios, quien compartió con él a pesar de las murmuraciones de “todos”.

            ¿Qué enseñanza nos brinda esta historia? Aun los que consideramos más pecadores, tienen la oportunidad de arrepentirse. Un arrepentimiento verdadero  se muestra con buenas obras. Pero tenemos también a los que murmuran, critican y excluyen, que no confían en el poder del amor. Debemos cuidarnos de  hacer algo semejante. Jesús no se dejó llevar por los prejuicios. Nos enseña  que  debemos  llevar el mensaje del evangelio a todos y compartir con todos.

 

Oración: Señor, guíanos  en la rectificación  de nuestros errores, ayúdanos a mirar con amor a todos y evitar los prejuicios y murmuraciones. Permite que tratemos de seguir a Jesús en su mismo sentir. Amén.

THE TRANSFIGURATION

Matthew 17:1-9

A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son whom I dearly love. I am very pleased with him.  Listen to him!”

Matthew 17:5 (CEB)

            The text says that Jesus climbed the mountain with Peter, James, and John.  Why did Jesus take them up there?  To be alone with them or so that they would know who he really was? They had a great opportunity to see the Lord full of glory. They had the opportunity to experience a marvelous moment.  They also had the opportunity to listen to the voice of God saying:  This is my beloved Son, whom I have chosen: listen to him.  Therefore, they had the certainty that Jesus is the Son of God.  If there was any doubt, it was discarded with this declaration. 

            Because of this we should follow him and listen to his message.  The power to follow Jesus comes from the certainty of knowing who he is, if we believe without doubting that he is the Son of God, without a doubt we will want to do what he says.

            Let us keep our minds and hearts open to the voice of God, let us listen in silence to what he wants to say to us, let us trust in his plans.  God loves us and wants the best for us. 

 

Prayer:  Beloved Father, allow us to be able to know you and to listen to your voice in the midst of so much hostility.  Amen.

LA TRANSFIGURACIÓN

Mateo 17:1-

…y de la nube salió una voz que dijo:”Este es mi Hijo amado, a quién he elegido: escúchenlo”

Mateo 17:5

            El texto dice que Jesús subió al monte con Pedro, Santiago y Juan. ¿Por qué Jesús los llevó a ellos hasta allá? Para estar solo con ellos o para que supieran quién era realmente. Ellos tuvieron la gran oportunidad de ver al Señor lleno de gloria, tuvieron la oportunidad de presenciar un momento maravilloso. También tuvieron la oportunidad de escuchar la voz de Dios diciendo: Este es mi Hijo amado, a quién he elegido: escúchenlo.  Por lo tanto, tuvieron la seguridad de que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios. Si había alguna duda, queda desechada con esta declaración.

            Por eso debemos seguirle y escuchar su mensaje. El poder para seguir a Jesús viene de la seguridad de saber quién es, si creemos sin dudar que es el Hijo de Dios, sin duda desearemos hacer lo que dice.

            Tengamos abierta nuestras mentes y corazones a la voz de Dios, escuchemos en silencio lo que nos quiere decir, confiemos en sus designios. Dios nos ama y quiere lo mejor para nosotros.

 

Oración: Padre amado, permite que podamos conocerte y escuchar tu voz en medio de tanta hostilidad. Amén.

I WANT TO SEE YOU, LORD

John 9: 35-41

Surely we aren’t blind, are we?

John 9: 40b (CEB)

            A few days ago, someone told me that she was very worried because her plans were not coming out as she had hoped. She did not understand why God was not responding to her petitions since she had strongly asked for what she needed.

            Many times we see God like this, as one who is on the phone responding immediately to each call, because since God’s love is immense, God must be a slave to our petitions.

            God loves us, God listens to us, but God tries to remove our blindness, teaching us patience and faith.  Doubts paralyze our action and rob us of our joy.  Faith is a spiritual gift that infuses certainty in the things that we can not see.  We can not behave like pharisees who adapted their faith to their convenience.  Our God is true, our God does not change nor remain indifferent to our supplications.  God always listens to the people, but God answers on God’s time.  We can not put conditions on God. We should be patient and in communion with God, even when God does not respond to prayers according to our expectations.

 

Prayer: Good God, thank you for the gift of faith, allow us to be patient and not blind to your presence.  Thank you for always being in the midst of us–even when we sometimes ignore you.  Amen.

QUIERO VERTE SEÑOR

Juan 9: 35-41

¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?

 Juan. 9: 40b

            Hace unos días una persona me dijo que estaba muy preocupada porque sus planes no estaban saliendo como esperaba; no entendía por qué Dios no estaba respondiendo a sus súplicas si ella le había pedido encarecidamente por sus necesidades.

            Muchas veces vemos así a Dios, como aquel que está al teléfono respondiendo cada llamada al instante, porque como su amor es inmenso, ha de ser nuestro esclavo de peticiones.

            Dios nos ama, Dios nos escucha, pero Dios trata de quitar nuestra ceguera enseñándonos la paciencia y la fe. Las dudas paralizan la acción y nos roban el gozo. La fe es un don del Espíritu que infunde certeza en las cosas que no se ven. No podemos comportarnos como fariseos que adaptaron su fe a su conveniencia. Nuestros Dios es verdadero, no cambia ni permanece indiferente ante nuestras súplicas. Dios siempre escucha a su pueblo, solo que Él responde a su tiempo. A Dios no podemos ponerle condiciones. Debemos ser pacientes y estar en comunión con Él, aunque no responda a las oraciones según nuestras expectativas.

 

Oración: Buen Dios, gracias por el regalo de la fe, permite que podamos ser pacientes y no ciegos ante tu presencia. Gracias porque aún cuando a veces te ignoramos,  tú siempre estás en medio nuestro. Amén.

THE SIN OF INSENSITIVITY

Luke 12:13-21

Then Jesus said to them, “Watch out! Guard yourself against all kinds of greed. After all, one’s life isn’t determined by one’s possessions, even when someone is very wealthy.”

            One of the most challenging times of the week is the one dedicated to review a kind of  “case study” we have put together with my daughter and her friends from school. It is a very special time because we can verify their learning and help them to create study habits.  One of the times that gives me the most anxiety and concern is when I explain some content and I sense that they are focused on their own activities and are not paying attention to me.  I confess that I feel a great empathy with their teacher, who has 30 students in her classroom every day.

            According to this passage, Jesus must have felt something like this with his disciples. The teacher dedicated a lot of his time teaching about values like unity, trust in God, consistency, trying to be sure his followers understood the need to treasure what is truly important:  a committed spirituality and a life of service to God and neighbor. Nevertheless, they did not understand. And they could not understand because they had their senses focused on other priorities:  their material things, their interests, their affairs.  This is the insensitivity that Jesus speaks of. 

            Could we be like these disciples in that when the Teacher speaks to us we are so focused on our own affairs that we do not hear or understand? Let us not commit the sin of insensitivity wanting “to win our life” with the idols of power, money, or status, because this is how we will lose it. 

 

Prayer: Our God, permit us to be attentive to your message, so that our discipleship may be consistent and committed.  Help us to embrace a faith that pushes us to genuine love that allows us to live an abundant life.  Amen.

EL PECADO DE LA INSENSATEZ

Lucas 12:13-21

También les dijo: Manténganse atentos y cuídense de toda avaricia, porque la vida del hombre no depende de los muchos bienes que posea

Lucas 12:15

            Uno de los momentos más retadores de la semana, es el que dedico a repasar a mi hija y sus amigas de la escuela en una especie de “casa de estudio” que hemos habilitado. Es un momento muy especial porque podemos verificar el aprendizaje y ayudarles a crear hábitos de estudio. Uno de los momentos que me produce mayor ansiedad y molestia es cuando explico un contenido y siento que están centradas en sus propias actividades e intereses para no prestarme atención. Confieso que siento gran empatía con su maestra, que cada día tiene treinta estudiantes en el aula.

            Algo así debe haber sentido Jesús con sus discípulos, según este pasaje. El maestro dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo a enseñar acerca de valores como la unidad, la confianza en Dios, la coherencia; tratando que sus seguidores comprendieran la necesidad de atesorar lo verdaderamente importante: una espiritualidad comprometida, una vida de servicio a Dios y al prójimo. Sin embargo, no entendían. Y no podían entender porque tenían sus sentidos atentos a otras prioridades: sus bienes, sus intereses, sus asuntos. Esta es la insensatez de la que habla Jesús.

            ¿Seremos como esos discípulos que cuando el Maestro nos habla estamos tan centrados en nuestros propios asuntos, que no escuchamos y no entendemos? No cometamos el pecado de la insensatez queriendo “ganar nuestra vida” con los ídolos del poder, dinero, o estatus, pues así la perderemos.

 

Oración: Dios nuestro, permite que estemos atentos a tu mensaje, para que nuestro discipulado sea coherente y comprometido. Ayúdanos a abrazar una fe que nos lance al amor genuino que nos hace vivir la vida a plenitud. Amén.

KNOWING TO ASK

Psalms 88:1-9

“Let my prayer reach you! Turn your ear to my outcry…”

Psalm 88:2 (CEB)

            The psalmist cries to God, but he does it in an authoritarian way, arrogantly questioning God because of his suffering.

            God knows our needs perfectly even before we ask him; and God also knows what is best and most timely for us.  Let us remember that God has plans for each one of us. 

            Prayer is one way to converse or speak with God, a respectful, reverent, humble, simple, and sincere way.  One has to know how to ask and patiently wait for the answer.  God always responds. We always remember the wise words of Professor Castellanos: “God responds at the opportune time, with a very adequate answer that at times surprises us because it goes beyond our petitions.”

            It is not good or right to try to manipulate God. Pray, wait, and accept God’s will.  Ask, but ask with faith, hope and patience. God will give a good portion, packed down, firmly shaken and overflowing, as Jesus promises in Luke 6:38.

 

Prayer: Good God, give me the necessary wisdom to speak with you, thanking you and asking you with faith and living hope.  Amen.

SABER PEDIR

Salmo 88:1-9

Llegue mi oración a tu presencia; Inclina tu oído a mi clamor

Salmo 88:2

            El salmista clama a Dios, pero lo hace de manera autoritaria, prepotente, cuestionando a Dios por sus sufrimientos.

            Dios conoce perfectamente nuestras necesidades  aun antes de que se las pidamos; y también sabe que es lo mejor y más conveniente para nosotros. Recordemos que Él tiene planes para cada uno de nosotros.

            La oración es una manera de conversar o hablar con Dios, de manera respetuosa, reverente, humilde, sencilla y sincera. Hay que saber pedir y esperar pacientemente la respuesta. Dios siempre responde. Recordamos siempre las sabias palabras del Maestro Castellanos: “Dios responde en el momento oportuno, con una respuesta tan adecuada que a veces nos sorprendemos porque sobrecumple nuestras peticiones.”

            No es bueno ni correcto tratar de manipular a Dios. Ora, espera y acepta su voluntad. Pide, pero pide con fe, esperanza y paciencia. Dios dará una medida buena, apretada, sacudida y repleta, como nos promete en Lucas 6:38.

 

Oración: Dios bueno, dame la sabiduría necesaria para hablar contigo, agradecerte y pedirte, con fe y esperanza viva. Amén.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!

Psalm 4:6 (NRSV)

            Today I want to leave you with this prayer to be a part of our devotional time. Let’s make this prayer real in our lives:

            “Jesus, today you showed us the way with the example of your life, death and resurrection; help me to spread your fragrance wherever I go; flood my soul with your Spirit and your Life; penetrate into all my being and take my life in such a way that from now on it is nothing but an irradiation of yours. Remain in my heart, Lord Jesus, with a union so intimate that  souls that have contact with mine can sense in me your presence and that, in seeing me, they forget that I exist and think only of You.

            “Let me preach your Name with words or without . . . by my example, with the power of  your attraction, with the supernatural evidence of the love that my heart feels for You. Stay with me. So may I become a light for others. That light will come from You; not a single one of its rays will be mine. I will serve you only as an instrument through which you illuminate souls through me. Let me praise you in the most agreeable form, lifting my lamp lit to dissipate the shadows in the way of other souls. Don’t let my lamp go out. May your Light remain for ever.”

 

Prayer: Lord, may we make from this prayer our daily acts. We pray in your name. Amen.

¡Haz, Señor, que sobre nosotros brille la luz de tu rostro!

            Hoy quiero dejarles con esta oración para que forme parte de nuestro tiempo devocional. Hagamos realidad esta oración en nuestras vidas:

            “Jesús tú nos mostraste el camino con el ejemplo de tu vida, muerte y resurrección, ayúdame a esparcir tu fragancia donde quiera que yo vaya; inunda mi alma con tu Espíritu y tu Vida; penetra en todo mi ser y toma mi vida, de tal manera que no sea en adelante sino una irradiación de la tuya. Quédate en mi corazón Señor Jesús, con una unión tan íntima, que las almas que tengan contacto con la mía, puedan sentir en mí tu presencia  y que, al mirarme, olviden que yo existo y no piensen sino en Ti.

            “Déjame predicar tu Nombre con palabras o sin ellas... con mi ejemplo,  con la fuerza de tu atracción, con la sobrenatural influencia evidentemente del amor que mi corazón siente por Ti. Quédate conmigo. Así podré convertirme en luz para los otros. Esa luz, oh Jesús, vendrá de Ti; ni uno solo de sus rayos será mío: yo te serviré apenas de instrumento para que Tú ilumines a las almas a través de mí. Déjame alabarte en la forma que es más agradable, llevando mi lámpara encendida para disipar las sombras en el camino de otras almas. Que mi lámpara no se apague. YOU DON’T ABANDON ME

Luke 10:38-42

            A number of years ago, I found myself in a terrible economic situation which required me to seek work, which I found in the kitchen of a sugar cane brigade. There I made a good salary, made many friends, and of course, my economic situation improved a great deal.

            In that same place I got to know the one who would become my husband, after having spent many years as a divorcée. But after a few months, I was depressed with no spirit whatever, and I realized that it had been a long time that I had not been in my congregation because my job was consuming all my time. One day I dreamed that a voice was telling me to work for Him, and I interpreted the voice to be that of the Lord.

            With great determination and not wanting to exaggerate, I quit my job and began to sell things from my own house, without affecting my participation in the activities of the church. In the year 2017, my husband died, and I experienced an immense sadness. Once more I was beset by doubts about my economic wellbeing. God be praised, I was able to earn the widows’ pension and continued with my little sales, and to this day I have never lacked for life’s necessities.

 

Prayer: My God, may we always trust in you, because you never abandon us. Amen.

TÚ NO ME DESAMPARAS

Lucas 10:38-42

…Marta, Marta, afanada y turbada estas con muchas cosas

Lucas 10 :41

            Hace unos años me encontraba en pésima situación económica, lo que me obligó a buscar trabajo, el cual conseguí en la cocina de una brigada cañera. Allí ganaba un buen salario, además de hacer muchas amistades y, por supuesto, mi economía mejoró mucho.

            En dicho lugar conocí a quien sería mi esposo, luego de haber estado muchos años divorciada. Pero al cabo de unos meses estaba decaída, sin ánimos para nada; y me percaté que llevaba tiempo sin congregarme porque el nuevo trabajo consumía todo mi tiempo. Un día sueño que una voz me decíía que trabajara para Él, y yo lo interpreté como la voz del Señor.

            Muy decidida, y sin ánimos de exagerar, dejéé el trabajo y me dediqué a hacer algunas ventas en mi propia casa, sin afectar mi participación en las actividades de la iglesia. En el año 2017 mi esposo falleció y fue un dolor inmenso, una vez más me asaltó la duda sobre mi bienestar económico. Gracias a Dios se me permitió cobrar la pensión por viudez y continué con mis pequeñas ventas y, hasta el día de hoy, no me ha faltado lo necesario para vivir.

 

Oración: Dios mío, que confiemos en ti en todo tiempo, porque tú nunca nos desamparas. Amén.

A SHOCK

Luke 17:5-10

‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’

Luke 17: 10b (NRSV)

            Often when we read the words of Jesus in the Bible, we struggle to understand their significance, above all because they were said in such different contexts than ours. It’s possible that that would be the impression on reading the passage from Luke 17: 5-10, when the disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith.

            The Lord answers them with a reproach and almost begs the question, how to increase something that practically is nonexistant. Jesus tells them that their faith isn’t even as big as a mustard seed; otherwise they would be able to do extraordinary things.

            The story that follows could be even more confusing: a servant working in the field and then returning, has to serve his master first because that is what he was ordered to do.

            Each of those examples is like a shock to our faith, is like “shock therapy” to arouse it, to make us aware that through our faith we can move mountains and that it is our responsibility and duty to maintain and cultivate it.

 

Prayer: Lord, may your words be the “shocks” necessary to increase our faith. Amen.

UNA SACUDIDA

Lucas 17:5-10

….siervos inútiles somos, pues lo que debíamos hacer, hicimos.

Lucas 17: 9

            En algunas ocasiones cuando leemos las palabras de Jesús en la Biblia nos cuesta entender su significado, sobre todas las cosas porque fueron dichas en contextos muy diferentes al nuestro. Es posible que esa sea la impresión al leer el pasaje de Lucas 17:5-10, momento en que los discípulos le pidieron al Señor que les aumentara la fe.

            El Señor les responde con un reproche y casi nos salta la pregunta, ¿cómo aumentar algo que no existe prácticamente?, Jesús les dice que su fe no es tan siquiera como un grano de mostaza, porque de ser así podrían hacer cosas extraordinarias.

            La historia que sigue puede ser más confusa aún, un siervo trabaja en el campo y luego de regresar aun tiene que servir primero al amo porque es lo que se le ordenó.

            Cada uno de los ejemplos es como una sacudida a nuestra fe, es como una “terapia de choque” para despertarla, para hacernos consientes que mediante la fe podemos mover montañas y que es nuestra responsabilidad y deber mantenerla y cultivarla.

 

Oración: Señor, que tus palabras sean “sacudidas” necesarias para aumentar nuestra fe. Amén
