Mother’s Day

SHE OPENED HER HEART

Acts 16:13-15

Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysus, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.(NIV)

Acts 17:34

            When Paul arrives at Philippi, he begins his preaching work. There was no synagogue in the city, so he goes to the outskirts beside the river where various women were accustomed to collect for prayer. And there was Lydia, the daughter of Thyatira, who “opens her heart” to the Lord and converts her house into a center of evangelization in Philippi.

            Something similar happened in Athens; the mention of Damaris points to a woman who could not remain in anonymity when together with important people such as Dionysius the Areopagite, undoubtedly because he occupied some relevant role in the community.

            Acts is also responsible for telling us about Priscilla and Aquila’s marriage. Aquila had the same trade as Paul but was also dedicated to preaching. It is unusual that the woman’s name is mentioned before that of her husband is due to the fact that she was the one who played a more active role in preaching.(Acts 18:18-26)

            The existence of many women who opened their hearts to the gospel since New Testament times includes the group of Jesus’ followers who assisted him materially (Luke 8: 3). This fact has also allowed the transmission of the message until our day.

 

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the testimony of so many stories of faith of our communities. Bless them all. Amen.

Día de la Mujer

Ella abrió el corazón

Hechos 16:13-15

Pero algunos de los que se le habían juntado,  creyeron; entre ellos, Dionisio el areopagita y una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros con ellos

            Cuando Pablo llega a Filipos comienza su labor de predicación. No hay una sinagoga en la ciudad así que se dirige hacia las afueras, junto al río, donde se acostumbraban a reunir algunas mujeres para la oración. Y allí está Lidia, natural de Tiatira, quien “abre su corazón” al Señor y se convierte su casa en el centro de la evangelización en Filipos.

            En Atenas sucede algo semejante, la mención de Dámaris apunta a una mujer que no pudo quedar en el anonimato junto a gente importante como Dionisio el areopagita, indudablemente porque ocupó algún rol relevante en aquella comunidad.

            Hechos también se encarga de contarnos acerca de la labor del matrimonio de Priscila y Aquila, quienes tenían el mismo oficio de Pablo pero que se dedicaban también a la predicación. Es poco usual que el nombre de la mujer se mencione antes que el del esposo, lo cual nos indica que ella era la que ocupaba un rol más activo en la predicación (Hch 18.18,26).

            La existencia de muchas mujeres que abrieron al corazóón al evangelio desde los tiempos del Nuevo Testamento, incluso aquel grupo de seguidoras de Jesús que le apoyaban materialmente (Lc 8.3), ha permitido también la transmisión del mensaje hasta nuestro días.

 Oración: Gracias, Señor, por el testimonio de tantas heroínas de la fe de nuestras comunidades. Bendícelas a todas. Amén.
