THE WORLD’S BARRENNESS

Luke 13:1-9

He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it.

Luke 13:8 (NRSV)

            We do not know with certainty the reasons that some of Jesus’ listeners had for alluding to the murder of Galileans, but Jesus took this occasion to speak to his audience about their relationship with God. It is as if he had said to them, “Consider your deeds. Unless you repent, you will all perish too.”

            At times we are inclined to speak of the death of others, but find it disagreeable to speak of our own death and the fate that awaits us beyond. The state of our own lives should be the primary object of our attention. Let’s show interest in what is going on around us. May we have pity and compassion for those who are victims of violence or subject to sudden death; even more, let’s not forget to examine our conscience or remember the lessons learned from those around us.

            As long as we are clothed in this mortal body, we will have sins to confess and faults to regret. Let us repent and humble ourselves more deeply each time, and let us bear good fruit so as not to be cut down; God will not tolerate infertility forever. Respond to the farmer’s patience  and  prepare to bear good fruit for God.

 

Prayer: Beloved Father, allow our hearts to come to a sincere repentance in order to bear good fruit of the Spirit, loving God and neighbor. Amen.

LO ESTÉRIL DEL MUNDO

Lucas 13:1-9

 

Pero el viñador le dijo: “Señor, déjala todavía un añño más, hasta que yo le afloje la tierra y la abone.

Lucas 13:8

            No sabemos con certeza las razones que tuvieron algunos de los oyentes de Jesús para hacer alusión al asesinato de los galileos, pero Jesús tomó esta mención para hablar a su auditorio respecto a sus relaciones con Dios. Es como si les hubiera dicho: “Consideren sus hechos. A menos que se arrepientan, todos perecerán también”.

            A veces estamos muy dispuestos a hablar de la muerte de los demás, y es que disgusta hablar de nuestra propia muerte y de la suerte que nos espera más allá. El estado de nuestras vidas debiera ser lo que primero ocupara nuestra atención. Tomemos interés en lo que acaece en torno de nosotros; tengamos piedad y compasión de quienes son víctimas de la violencia o de una muerte repentina; más no olvidemos hacer un examen de conciencia y fijar en la memoria las lecciones que nos enseñe la experiencia de los demás.

            En tanto que estemos revestidos de este cuerpo mortal, tendremos pecados que confesar y culpas que lamentar. Arrepintámonos y humillémonos más profundamente cada vez, y demos buenos frutos para no ser cortados; Dios no va a tolerar para siempre la infecundidad. Responda a la paciencia del agricultor y prepárese a dar frutos para Dios.

 

Oración: Padre amado, permite que a nuestros corazones llegue un sincero arrepentimiento para dar buenos frutos del Espíritu, amando a Dios y al prójimo. Amén.
