THE MOST IMPORTANT VISA

Micah 6:8; I Corinthians 13:13

And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

I Corinthians 13:13 (NRSV)

            There is only one Psalm that specifically mentions eternal life; the remaining 45 occasions appear in the New Testament. The two passages to meditate on today contain codes that merge with each other. They show what is required for the desired final destination. Micah 6:8 instructs us to seek justice, goodness, and humility; in the New Testament we are demanded to remain in faith, hope, and love (1 Corinthians 13:13).

            Two other texts come to mind: the rich young man unable to part with his material riches, and the so-called “Judgement of the Nations,” where service without exclusionary philosophies leads to the approval of our final destination, our most important “visa.” As one of the most famous preachers of history said in an interview at age 97: “...I have traveled the world and I have gone to places that do not know the Bible or Jesus, yet they behave as Jesus commands us. We are going to find surprises in Heaven.”

            Do those whom God places in situations of justice and social service, that dignify the human being, have “the visa?” Doesn’t eternal life have to do with our behavior coupled to the purpose that God has for all humanity? Let us always be ready to share with our fellows the power of love, in humble service, in hope, justice and faith, because if we do not love our brother that we see, how can we love the God that we do not see?

 

Prayer: God of love, we pray that you may guide our steps so that at the end of our journey here on earth, we may have the surety of enjoying what you have reserved for us. We pray in the sacred name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

LA VISA MÁS IMPORTANTE

Miqueas 6:8; I COR. 13:13

Y ahora permanecen la fe, la esperanza y el amor, pero el más importante de todos es el amor.

I Cor 13:13

            Hay un sólo salmo que menciona específicamente la vida eterna, las restantes 45 ocasiones aparecen en el Nuevo Testamento. Los dos pasajes a meditar contienen códigos que se funden uno con otro. Nos señalan los requisitos para el destino final ansiado. Miqueas 6:8 nos instruye en buscar la justicia, la bondad y la humildad; en el N.T. se nos demanda a permanecer en  fe, esperanza y amor  (1ra Corintios 13:13).

            Otros dos textos vienen a mi mente: el joven rico incapaz de desprenderse de sus riquezas materiales, y el llamado “Juicio a las naciones”, donde el servicio sin filosofías excluyentes da la aprobación de nuestro destino final, nuestra “visa” más importante. Como dijo uno de los más famosos predicadores de la historia, en una entrevista a los 97 años:

“...he recorrido el mundo y he ido a lugares que no conocen la Biblia ni a Jesús, sin embargo se comportan como nos manda Jesús. Nos vamos a encontrar sorpresas en el Cielo".

            ¿Tienen “la visa” aquellos que Dios coloca en situaciones de justicia y servicio social, que dignifiquen al ser humano? ¿Acaso la vida eterna no tiene ver con nuestro comportamiento acoplado al propósito que Dios tiene para toda la humanidad? Estemos siempre listos para compartir con nuestros semejantes el poder del amor, en servicio humilde, en esperanza, justicia y fe, pues si no amamos a nuestro hermano que vemos, ¿cómo podemos amar al Dios que no vemos?

 

Oración: Te rogamos Dios de amor que guíes nuestros pasos para que al final de nuestra jornada aquí en la tierra tengamos la seguridad de disfrutar lo que nos tienes reservado.  En el nombre sagrado de Jesucristo. Amén.
