SONS OF CONSOLATION

Acts 9:26-28

            In Acts 4: 36, Joseph,who is going to be known by the nickname of Barnabas that the apostles gave him, and who our versions of the Bible translated as “son of consolation,”  is presented to us. It was precisely this son of consolation who presented the recently converted Saul of Tarsus to the apostles, telling them the impactful experience of this man and his encounter with Jesus. Such was the magnitude of Barnabas’ work that in the book of Acts he is always mentioned first when speaking about him and Saul. (Actss 11:30; 12:25; 13:2, 7).

            It was Barnabas who gave John Mark another chance for a second missionary journey, even though he had abandoned them on the first (Acts 15:37-38). The Aramaic “son of consolation” could be read as “comforter.” The Greek word is paráklētos which John uses to speak of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16, 26). The translation is difficult because literally it is someone who has been called to a company. It suggests “the capacity and adaptability to provide help” (W.E.Vine’s dictionary). We need to fill ourselves with Barnabas, believers who give everything for others, who believe and accompany those who are not at all easy, but who, by doing so, generate profound and radical changes in the lives of people and the church.

 

Prayer: Make us true Sons of consolation, to trust and hope for the better for others, to provide the right help at the right time. Amen.

            En Hch 4.36 se nos presenta a un José que va a ser conocido por el sobrenombre que los apóstoles le pusieron: Bernabé, y que nuestras versiones de la Biblia traducen como “hijo de consolación”. Fue precisamente este “hijo de consolación” quien presentó al reciéén convertido Saulo de Tarso a los apóstoles narrándoles la impactante experiencia de este en su encuentro con el Jesús resucitado. Tal fue la magnitud de la labor de Bernabé que en el libro de los Hechos se le menciona siempre primero cuando se habla de él y de Saulo (Hch 11.30; 12.25; 13.2, 7).

            Fue Bernabé quien da una segunda oportunidad a Juan Marcos para un segundo viaje misionero, a pesar que este les había abandonado en el primero (ver Hch 15.37-38). El arameísmo “hijo de consolación” pudiera leerse como “consolador”. La palabra griega es paráklētos, la cual Juan emplea para hablar del Espíritu Santo (Jn 14.16, 26). Resulta difícil la traducción pues literalmente es alguien que ha sido llamado para acompañar, sugiere "la capacidad y adaptabilidad para prestar ayuda" (Diccionario de W.E. Vine). Necesitamos llenarnos de Bernabés, creyentes que lo dan todo por los demás, que creen y acompañan a quienes no resultan nada fácil, pero que al así obrar, generan cambios profundos y radicales en la vida de las personas y de la  iglesia.

 

Oración: Haznos verdaderos hijos de consolación, para confiar y esperar lo mejor de los demás, para prestar la ayuda idónea en el momento necesario. Amén.
