USE YOUR GIFT WISELY

I Corinthians 12: 4-7

…Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself than you ought, but rather with sober judgement, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

            The Corinthian church may seem distant to us, not only because of the distant time in which the epistle was written, but also because of its culture and social environment. But we should not be surprised by the similarities with our own realities in our congregations today.

            A church prodigal in gifts was at the same time in  discord regarding their use and worth. There was a kind of competition to “shine” more than others, for which Paul warns, in essence, about the origin of the gifts and their purpose. In another of his epistles, written to the Philippians, he exhorts do nothing out of selfishness or vanity, but in humility.

            If your gift is a source of conflict, you should ask yourself about the true motivations for its use. Do you want your image to be the one that stands out? In that case we are like those Pharisees who loved to pray in the marketplaces to be praised by the people. It must be the glory of God, the giver of the gifts, the only one that must be shown. Let us remember that the “still more excellent” way that Paul mentions is precisely that of love, the one where the use of our gifts results in a real benefit for the edification of the body of Christ.

 

Prayer: Lord, we need the gifts of your Spirit. Help us to exercise them always humbly and properly. In Jesus’ name, amen.

EMPLEA TU DON ADECUADAMENTE

I Corintios 12: 4-7

Nadie tenga un concepto de sí más alto que el que debe tener,  sino más bien piense de sí mismo con moderación,  según la medida de fe que Dios le haya dado

Romanos 12: 3

            La iglesia de Corinto nos puede parecer lejana, no solamente por el tiempo distante en que se escriba la epístola, sino además por su cultura y ambiente social. Pero no nos deben sorprender las semejanzas con nuestras propias realidades en nuestras congregaciones de hoy.

            Una iglesia pródiga en dones, se encontraba a la vez en medio de discordias con relación a su empleo y valía, había una especie de competencia por “brillar” más que los otros, por lo cual Pablo alerta, en esencia, acerca de la procedencia de los dones y de su propósito. En otra de sus epístolas, escrita a los filipenses, exhorta: no hagan nada por egoísmo o vanidad; más bien, con humildad.

            Si tu don es fuente de conflicto, debes preguntarte por las verdaderas motivaciones de su empleo, ¿procuras que tu imagen sea la que resalte? en tal caso somos como aquellos fariseos que amaban orar en las plazas para ser alabados por la gente. Ha de ser la gloria de Dios, el dador de los dones, la única que debe mostrarse. Recordemos que el camino “aún más excelente” que menciona Pablo es precisamente el del amor, aquel donde el empleo de nuestros dones resulta en un verdadero beneficio para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo.

 

Oración: Señor, necesitamos de los dones de tu Espíritu. Ayúdanos para ejercerlos siempre humilde y adecuadamente. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.
