THE MASTER GARDENER

2 Kings 22:8-20

Therefore, I will gather you to your fathers….Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.

2 Kings 22:20 (NIV)

            When the Master Gardener inspects the gardens of our soul, he is not looking for a frenzy of spiritual work, but fruit: signs of life and growth.

            One of the most common errors in the Christian community is to equate religious activities, such as attending worship, reading the Bible and praying, with spiritual growth. We suppose that if we participate in these activities we are good Christians. We have confused the means with the ends. If these activities help us to be like Christ, they get shifted to being the means for our spiritual growth. In the metaphor of the garden, these activities help to cultivate the fruit, but they are not the fruit.

            The history of King Josiah illustrates this well. Josiah was not fulfilling the law. He even had a hatred of the law. Nevertheless, as soon as he discovered and read the book of the law, he was humbled and he repented. God made his heart right again even though he had not yet complemented the heart with the right action.

            Right action flows from the heart. Attending worship, reading the Scripture lessons or praying daily can be converted into a routine activity in place of being a rich experience full of communion and service. In each case, the radical difference is in the heart.

 

Prayer: I ask you, Lord, to help me be more like Josiah, wanting a heart that is right. Help me to cultivate a humble and repentant heart and to grow spiritually. Amen.

EL MAESTRO JARDINERO

2 Reyes 22:8-20

Porque tanto, he aquí yo te recogeré con tus padres..., y no verán tus ojos todo el mal que yo traigo sobre este lugar.

2 Reyes 22:20

            Cuando el Maestro Jardinero inspecciona los jardines de nuestra alma, no está buscando un frenesí de trabajo espiritual, sino fruto: señales de vida y crecimiento.

            Uno de los errores más comunes de la comunidad cristiana es equiparar las actividades religiosas, tales como asistir a la iglesia, leer la Biblia y orar, con crecimiento espiritual. Suponemos que si participamos de estas actividades entonces somos buenos cristianos. Hemos confundido los medios con el fin. Si estas actividades nos ayudan a ser semejantes a Cristo, se convierten en el medio para nuestro crecimiento espiritual. En la metáfora de la jardinería, esta ayuda a cultivar el fruto, pero no es el fruto.

            La historia del rey Josías lo ilustra bien. Josías no estaba cumpliendo la ley, ni siquiera había oído de ella. Sin embargo, tan pronto como se descubrió y se leyó el libro de la ley, se humilló y se arrepintió. Dios recompensó su corazón recto, aunque todavía no se había complementado con la actividad correcta.

            El actuar correcto fluye del corazón. Asistir a los cultos, la lectura de las Escrituras o la oración diaria, pueden convertirse tan solo en una actividad de rutina en lugar de ser una experiencia rica llena de comunión y servicio. En cada caso, la diferencia radica en el corazón.

 

Oración: Te pido Señor, que me ayudes a ser más semejante a Josías, deseando un corazón recto. Ayúdame a cultivar un corazón humilde y arrepentido y a crecer espiritualmente. Amén.
