What’s the Point?

Nehemiah 6:1-14

“for they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.

Someone has remarked that the question “What’s the point?” often acts as a counterforce that saps the momentum needed to strive and achieve our dreams. Pessimists might use it as an excuse or justification for “not trying” or not making an effort: “What’s the point of studying if…?” “What’s the point of doing if…?” “What’s the point of saving if…?”

The biblical story tells us that the return of the exiles from Babylon, during the reign of the Persian king Cyrus, involved a great deal of sacrifice. Not only because of reintegrating into an environment that was no longer their own, but also because of the difficult conditions they found in the city of Jerusalem, which had previously been ravaged by enemy armies. Despite all this, Nehemiah remained convinced that something great could happen. As a leader, Nehemiah managed to involve the entire people in the work, overcame the difficulties posed by opposition, and personally engaged in the construction and restoration of the city.

Examples like Nehemiah’s allow us to redefine the “what for…?” Today, let us set aside apathy and put greater effort into our actions that bear witness to unity, courage, and perseverance in the faith.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we ask for your wisdom and optimism so that we may not cease in our efforts to build your Kingdom, here and now. Give us enough courage to face our “enemies.” Through Jesus we ask this. Amen.

¿Para qué?

Nehemías 6:1-14

“Pues ellos trataban de asustarnos, pensando que nos desanimaríamos y que no llevaríamos a cabo la obra; pero yo puse aún mayor empeño”.

Nehemías 6:9

Alguien ha comentado que la interrogante ¿para qué? en muchas ocasiones es una anti-fuerza que resta impulso para el esfuerzo y alcanzar sueños. Pudiera emplearse por los pesimistas como dudas o justificaciones para “no intentar”, no esforzarse: ¿Para qué estudiar si...? ¿Para qué hacer si…? ¿Para qué ahorrar si…?

La historia bíblica cuenta que el regreso de los repatriados en Babilonia, en tiempos del rey persa Ciro, implicó una cuota de grandes sacrificios. No solo por la re-inserción en un medio que ya no era el propio, sino además por las difíciles condiciones en las que encontraron la ciudad de Jerusalén, previamente asolada por los ejércitos enemigos. A pesar de todo ello, Nehemías seguía convencido que algo grandioso podía suceder. Como líder Nehemías logró involucrar a todo el pueblo en la obra, logró sortear las dificultades de la oposición, y él mismo se involucra en las labores de construcción y restauración de la ciudad.

Ejemplos como el de Nehemías permiten resignificar los ¿para qués…? Hoy dejemos a un lado la apatía y pongamos mayor empeño en nuestras acciones que dan testimonio de unidad, de valentía y perseverancia en la fe. 

Oración: Padre Celestial, pedimos de tu sabiduría y optimismo para no cesar en el empeño de la edificación de tu Reino, aquí y ahora. Dános el coraje suficiente para enfrentar a nuestros “enemigos”. Por Jesús lo pedimos. Amén.
