TRUST THAT IS BORN IN THE MIDST OF PAIN
Jeremiah 20:10-13
But the Lord is with me like a terrifying warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail…
Jeremiah 20:11 (NRSV)
The prophet Jeremiah finds himself in a difficult situation. He faces not only the rejection of his enemies but also the betrayal of those he thought were his friends. They accuse him, watch him, and wait for his downfall so they can mock him.
But in the midst of that abyss, Jeremiah does something extraordinary: he doesn’t deny his pain, but neither does he remain mired in it. The prophet finds hope in God’s presence. The Lord is with him, and that presence is more powerful than all his enemies combined.
This teaches us a beautiful truth: faith isn’t about pretending everything is fine when it isn’t. Jeremiah doesn’t hide his fear or his pain; he lays them before God with honesty. But at the same time, he chooses to trust.
He chooses to remember who his Father is, because his trust is not in things getting better, but in the fact that the Lord is faithful. Jeremiah has not yet seen deliverance, but he is already celebrating it. Because he knows that what God promises, He fulfills.
Prayer: Lord, stay with us in our pain. You are our giant. Amen.
