GOD BLESS YOU
ACTS 7:54-60

But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit,
gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Acts 7:55 (NRSV)
The word “blessing” appears dozens of times in the Old and New Testaments. We always encounter it when it forms part of a story where its significance plays a decisive part.
Stephen was on his knees. He had been brutally beaten over many hours. In the middle of a field in the darkness of night he realized that the end of his life was approaching. Remembering what as a Christian he had read many times he decided to pray to God for those who mistreated him and were taking his life. One of his captors, according to the testimony of a witness, pulled out his pistol, blasphemed, saying he didn’t need a blessing from anybody, and shot Stephen Hernández Alfonso to death.
God’s blessing is the greatest thing that a believer can count on. A phrase with such significance should not be a substitute for “Good day” or translate itself into an elegant way to end a conversation. Let’s ask God to bless us and others, but let’s do it as what it is: a fervent prayer asking for the company and direction of God and the Holy Spirit for everyone. Thus will we be truly blessed and desire blessing for others.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your constant and continuing blessing in my life. Amen.

DIOS TE BENDIGA
HECHOS 7:54-60

Tuesday, August 6 ONLY GOD IS PERFECT MATTHEW 7:1-5

Tuesday, August 6
ONLY GOD IS PERFECT
MATTHEW 7:1-5

Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.
Matthew 7:1 (NRSV)
The Iliad is one of the masterpieces of universal literature. It is the story of the Trojan War. In it, its author Homer focuses on Achilles, the work’s protagonist. The legend affirms that Achilles was invulnerable, except for his heel, that virtue obtained by his mother Tethys, considered the goddess of the sea in mythology, by submerging Achilles in the water of the River Styx. After killing Hector and avenging his friend Patroclus in battle, he is hit by an arrow shot by Paris and guided by the god Apollo, precisely into Achilles’ heel, leading to his fall and death. The heel was the only part of him not submerged in the waters of Styx.
It’s not our intent to retell such a great work in a few lines. We only want to emphasize that although we think of ourselves as invulnerable, we all have an “Achilles’ heel.” Perfection is not impossible, but it is costly and for that reason very infrequent.
Nothing is easier than highlighting the faults of others without stopping to evaluate our own. The Sermon on the Mount is very clear in affirming, “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye.” (7:5) Unfortunately, we are not perfect: we commit faults and there are always vulnerable traits in our personalities and actions that expose our weaknesses and defects. Let us think that as we suffer from others’ faults, they also suffer the same way from ours. We all have an “Achilles’ heel.”

Prayer: O Lord, teach me not to judge, because I too am imperfect. Help me to not see what is bad in those around me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

SOLO DIOS ES PERFECTO
MATEO 7:1-5

No juzguéis, para que no seáis juzgados
Mateo 7:1

Monday, August 5 A SURE CALL REVELATION 3:20-22

Monday, August 5
A SURE CALL
REVELATION 3:20-22

 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking;
Revelation 3:20 (NRSV)
The Lord says, “I am at your door calling.” A call which comes to every corner, to every home, to the door of the powerful or that of the beggar, to the door of those near and those far, to the door of those who see and those who are blind, to the door of those who wait, to the door of those who don’t seem to hear his call because the noise of the city, of consumption, of materialism, and of their own selfishness, prevent them from hearing and feeling his proximity and his call.
The Lord says, “I am at your door calling.” An actual, precise, concrete call; a call which does not compromise, does not question, which demands of us a reconsideration of our entire life that is profound, dynamic, and serene, of all that we do and don’t do for the world.
The Lord says, “I am at your door calling.”  A call which frees us, which fills us with jubilation, which opens the path to hope.

Prayer: Lord, we ask that we may always be attentive to your call. Amen.

UN LLAMADO SEGURO
APOCALIPSIS 3:20-22

He aquí, yo estoy a la puerta y llamo…
Apocalipsis 3:20

Sunday, August 4 GOD’S GLORY JOHN 9:1-11

Sunday, August 4
GOD’S GLORY
JOHN 9:1-11

But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?’
John 9:10 (NRSV)
In general, when difficulties or disabilities appear in our lives, they weigh on us, and unless we have exceptional strength, we may be overcome or destroyed. Nevertheless, although occasionally what seems to be an impossible obstacle appears, with our strength we can arrive at a place of distinction in history. Such is the case of Louis Braille, born in Paris in 1809, who lost his sight at age three. Despite this limitation he did not remain crushed by his critical situation, but he invented a system of reading based on the placement of points and reliefs. With touch this permitted the blind and those with poor vision to be the equal or better than those in the area of culture who are blessed with the ability to see.  It is impossible to say how many thousands of people in the past two hundred years have made their way in life despite this physical limitation.
Not infrequently when confronted with a small or transitory difficulty, we give up. As the well-known expression puts it, “They died before death came.” We should say, “They never die, because they were born dead.” Jesus is not only the Lord of the good times; he is Lord of all times. Sometimes what he has prepared us for is not a limitation, but in order that he might use us as instruments so that God’s glory may be manifest. Anyone can lose a battle; what’s important is not to lose a war. In God’s plans, an apparent defeat, a limitation, a reversal, can be part of a complex structure for showing the glory of God.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for again opening my eyes. Thank you for giving me spiritual vision. Amen.

LA GLORIA DE DIOS
JUAN 9:1-11

Saturday, August 3 Anniversary of the “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” Church (Remedios) COME AND STAY AT MY HOME ACTS 16:11-15

Saturday, August 3
Anniversary of the “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” Church (Remedios)

COME AND STAY AT MY HOME
ACTS 16:11-15

. . . come and stay at my home.
Acts 16:15 (NRSV)
In this passage we see the participation of women in the community. Lydia found an oasis amid that spiritual and moral desert which prevailed in that region. She teaches us the commitment we must make in accepting Jesus Christ into our lives. Spiritual growth through prayer and reading of the Bible, which is God’s Word, shows us the need for a surrender as Christians to the service of those near us.
Every human has the need to be helped, loved, and transformed sometime in their lives.
Today the participation of women in our communities is very important, and like Lydia, who didn’t hesitate to invite them home to her house, we should be an example and collaborator with the responsibility and commitment to God’s work. Let’s open our home to the gospel, to our neighbor, and let’s transform lives with our witness, just like the faithful Lydia.

Prayer: Lord, allow us, like Lydia, to help those who need us. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” (Remedios)

VENGAN A ALOJARSE EN MI CASA
HECHOS 16:11-15
...entrad en mi casa, y posad…
Hechos 16:15

Friday, August 2 DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE READING? ACTS 8:26-38

Friday, August 2
DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE READING?
ACTS 8:26-38

So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah.
He asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?"
Acts 8:30 (NRSV)
These days there is a great interest and desire to get familiar with the Bible. Also, the number of people interested in owning a Bible demands our attention. Wonderful! But, will they know what they read by themselves? They may be like the Ethiopian eunuch who needed someone who could explain what he read in the messianic prophecies of Isaiah. This person had the help of the evangelist Philip who didn’t hesitate to climb into the chariot and explain to this unknown traveler the message of hope and salvation that God had for him.
Today as well, there is a need for evangelists like Philip, attentive to the claim of those who read and don’t understand. We are today’s Philips to the many who are curious and interested like the Ethiopian, those who need explanations.
Let’s not be indifferent to this claim which is our evangelistic task.

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes and ears so that we may learn your message, and thus be able to explain it with great clarity to those gathered around us in order to learn it. Amen.

¿ENTIENDES LO QUE LEES?
HECHOS 8:26-38

Thursday, August 1 LET US WORK WITH LOVE FOR THE LORD COLOSSIANS 3:22-24

Thursday, August 1
LET US WORK WITH LOVE FOR THE LORD
COLOSSIANS 3:22-24

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily,
as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
No one in our country can fail to notice the attention being paid to improve the care and treatment of the customer – something that remains to be a reality. What is lacking to make that happen! It seems that in the period that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossian Church there were also analogies to our current situation. The sacred writer urges them to do everything with a full heart.
Recently I had to do some paperwork in my municipality, and I was surprised by the pleasure that the employees there took in their work. It gave us the impression that what they were doing was with all their heart. Perhaps these people have never heard the biblical exhortation before us today, but even though they hadn’t heard it, how well they put it into practice!
It would thus be appropriate for those of us who have both the privilege and the responsibility of knowing this passage to ask ourselves if every day we work from the heart as for the Lord, not for a wage nor even as a witness, but in surrendering to the commitment to do it from the heart, as for the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, don’t let the bustle of daily life keep us from being always grateful to you and to those around us. Give us the sensibility to do everything with love. Amen.

TRABAJEMOS CON AMOR PARA EL SEÑOR
COLOSENSES 3:22-24
