DiscernING THE SIGNS
OF THE TIMES
LuKE 12:54-56
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of
the earth and the sky. How is it that
you don’t know how to interpret this present time?
Luke 12:56
This situation which Jesus confronted (people who indifferently turn
their backs to the most urgent realities around them, and who don’t prioritize
what is truly important) is the same situation that we experience today. The context has changed of course, and
instead of weather or temperature forecasts we’ve surrounded ourselves with
innumerable attractions that make us waste our time and lose our passion for
the gospel. I am of course not opposing
the idea to properly enjoy ourselves in times of leisure or relaxation. I am
saying that when we make our pleasures a priority regardless of what is
happening around us we then become enslaved by them or even by our vices.
Through the example of Jesus, God invites us to follow him, and this
means living attentively. Being on top of the fortunes and misfortunes of other
people and of the entire world should not be a simple exercise in curiosity,
but an act of responsibility.
Prayer: Lord, help us to discover your voice
and your signs in this present time in which we are called to live. Grant that
we may be faithful witnesses in order to respond to our calling amid the signs
of our times. Amen.

Discerniendo
las señales de los tiempos
Lucas
12:54-56
¡Hipócritas! Sabéis distinguir el
aspecto del cielo y de la tierra,
¿y cómo no distinguís este tiempo?
Lucas 12:56
Esta situación enfrentada por Jesús (la gente que se
torna insensible ante las realidades más urgentes que les rodean, y no dan
prioridad a lo verdaderamente importante) es la misma que vivimos hoy día. Por
supuesto que el contexto ha cambiado y hoy en lugar de vaticinios del tiempo o
la temperatura nos hacemos rodear de un sinnúmero de cosas atractivas que nos
hacen perder el tiempo y la pasión por el evangelio. Por supuesto que no me
opongo a que se disfrute debidamente en los tiempos libres o de esparcimiento.
Me refiero a que cuando se hace de esto una prioridad y no importa lo que
acontezca alrededor, entonces nos convertimos en esclavos de nuestros propios
gustos o hasta vicios.
Dios nos invita a través del ejemplo de Jesús, a que
lo sigamos a él, y esto significa vivir atentamente. Vivir al tanto de las
dichas y desdichas del pueblo y del mundo todo no debe ser un simple ejercicio
de curiosidad, sino de responsabilidad.
Oración: Señor,
ayúdanos a descubrir tu voz y tus señales en este tiempo que nos ha tocado
vivir. Que podamos ser fieles testigos para responder a nuestro llamado en
medio de la impronta de estos tiempos. Amén
