PRIORITIES

MATTHEW 8: 18-22

Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their dead.

A little while ago I participated in a course where a consultant imparted the subject of how to make better use of our time. He took out a bottle with a wide mouth and a tray of large stones and asked, “How many stones do you believe fit in this bottle?” And he began putting in stones until he filled it.

“Is it full?” he asked.

“Yes,” we answered.

“Not so,” he replied, and put a pail with gravel in it on the table. He put part of the gravel in the bottle and began to shake it. The smaller stones penetrated the spaces left by the larger stones.

He smiled and asked again, “Is it full?” This time we replied, “Perhaps not.”

And he placed a pail of sand on the table. Then he asked, “Is it full?”

“No!” we shouted  

He took out a jar of water which he began to pour into the bottle, and it was still not full.

“Well, what has this demonstrated to us?” he asked. No one knew how to answer exactly. “What this lesson teaches us is that if we don’t put the large stones in first you will never be able to put them in afterwards.”

What are the large stones in your life? Are they your health; your spouse; your work; your meetings; power or money? Without doubt, God is that great stone, the firm rock we should put in first place in our lives. The rest will in time occupy its proper place.

    

Prayer:  Lord, today we ask for the ability to discern the true priorities in our lives. In your name we pray. Amen.

Jesús le dijo: deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos

Hace poco tiempo participé en un curso donde un  asesor nos impartió el tema de cómo aprovechar mejor nuestro tiempo. Sacó  un frasco  de boca ancha y una bandeja de piedras grandes y preguntó: “¿Cuántas piedras creen que cabe en este frasco?” y comenzó a meter piedras hasta que lo llenó.  Entonces preguntó: “¿Está lleno?”. “Sí”, contestamos nosotros. “Pues  no” replicó él Y puso en la mesa un cubo con  gravilla. Metió parte de la gravilla en el frasco y comenzó a agitarlo. Las piedrecillas penetraron por los espacios  que dejaban las piedras grandes. Sonrió y preguntó nuevamente: “¿Está lleno?” Esta vez respondimos: “Tal vez no”. Y puso en la mesa un cubo con  arena. Entonces preguntó: “¿Está lleno?”, “No”, gritamos. Cogió una jarra de agua que comenzó a verter en el frasco. Y este aun no estaba lleno. “Bien, ¿esto que nos ha demostrado?” preguntó. Nadie supo responder exactamente. “Lo que esta lección nos enseña es que si no colocamos las piedras grandes primero, nunca podrás colocarlas después”.

¿Cuáles son las piedras grandes en tu vida: tu salud, tu pareja, tu trabajo, tus reuniones, el poder o el dinero?

Sin dudas, Dios es esa gran piedra, la roca firme que debemos poner en primer lugar en nuestras vidas. El resto, en su momento, ocupará su lugar.

Oración: Señor, hoy te pedimos capacidad para discernir las  verdaderas prioridades en nuestras vidas. En tu nombre oramos. Amén.
