WITH OPEN ARMS

LUKE 15:11-32

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

Luke 15:20b

This story shows us a father whose love for his son surpasses all barriers of rancor or resentment. He is a man who rejoices over the return of his loved one, even when that son had lost everything that he had taken with him.   This is the story of a father who forgives because he loves.

We oftentimes portray God to others as a God who is waiting to punish us when we have failed.  We live our lives thinking that, when we commit an error, if we return to Him, we will be punished, the doors will be closed to us or we will be rejected. This parable, however, speaks to us of the patient attitude toward us, toward all humankind. The gospel tells us that the father who always loves is willing to welcome his son.

All of us, in one way or another, have separated ourselves from a healthy relationship with God and with those around us.  But what we need to announce to others is that God awaits us with open arms.

Prayer:  Lord, grant that we may follow your example and open our arms to receive those who approach us.  Heal the wounds caused by our loved ones, and help us to forgive all who have harmed us. Amen.

LUCAS 15:11-32

Todavía estaba lejos cuando su padre lo vio y se compadeció de él; salió corriendo a su encuentro, lo abrazó y lo besó.

Lucas  15: 20b

El relato nos muestra un padre cuyo amor por su hijo supera toda barrera de rencor o resentimiento. Alguien que se alegra del regreso de su ser querido, aun cuando este había perdido todo lo que se había llevado. Esta es la historia de un padre que perdona porque ama.

Muchas veces mostramos a otros un Dios que nos espera para castigarnos cuando hemos fallado.

Vivimos pensando que, al equivocarnos, si volvemos, nos castigarán, nos cerrarán las puertas o nos rechazarán. Sin embargo, esta parábola nos habla de la paciente actitud de Dios hacia nosotros, hacia toda la humanidad. El evangelio nos dice que el padre que ama siempre está dispuesto a recibir a su hijo.

Todos de una y otra manera nos hemos apartado de la sana relación con Dios y con quienes nos rodean. Pero lo que hay que anunciar es a un Dios que nos espera a todos con los brazos abiertos.

Oración: Señor, permite que sigamos tu ejemplo y abramos nuestros brazos para recibir a quienes se acercan a nosotros.  Permite que las heridas que nos han causado nuestros seres queridos puedan ser sanadas y que perdonemos a todos los que nos han hecho daño. Amén.
