I HAVE LOST EVERYTHING

PHILIPPIANS 3:1-11

Yet whatever gains I had,

these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ.

Philippians 3:7 (NRSV)

Paul’s life before his conversion was the life of a person of an assured economic position: a member of the dominant class, a Hebrew of Hebrews, Pharisee in accordance with the Law, esteemed by those who governed. After his encounter with Christ on the Damascus road, everything was overturned in such a way that he himself said, I have lost everything. For a man who had had everything to suddenly be stripped doubtless resulted in an extremely difficult situation. It certainly must have been hard for him, but that didn’t matter.

The Christian life is a paradox: one must lose in order to gain, to lose one’s life in order to find it again. The one who would follow Christ must set aside all personal ambition, relinquish the old human being and be a new person in Christ. That is one who gives everything for his neighbor, who is prepared to lose his life so that others can gain it.

Prayer: Lord, help us to set aside every attachment so that we may carry your cross and follow you. May we love as you love, give as you give. May we learn to be able to lose everything for you! Amen.

La vida de Pablo antes de su conversión era la vida de un hombre de sólida posición económica. Miembro de la clase dominante, hebreo de hebreos, fariseo en cuanto a la ley, estimado por los que gobernaban. A partir de su encuentro con Cristo en el camino de Damasco, todo se trastorna, de tal manera que él mismo dice: Lo he perdido todo. Para un hombre que lo ha tenido todo, de pronto verse despojado resulta sin dudas una situación muy difícil. Con certeza tiene que haber sido duro. Sin embargo, eso no le importó.

La vida del cristiano es una paradoja: tiene que perder para ganar; perder la vida para volverla a encontrar. El que quiera seguir a Cristo tiene que dejar a un lado toda ambición personal, despojarse del viejo ser humano, ser una nueva persona en Cristo. Ese es quien lo entrega todo por el prójimo, el que está dispuesto a perder su vida para que otros la ganen.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a despojarnos de todo apego para cargar tu cruz y seguirte. Que podamos amar como tú nos amas y entregarnos como tú te entregas. ¡Qué aprendamos a ser capaces de perderlo todo por ti! Amén.
