LISTEN TO THEIR MESSAGES

HEBREWS 12: 1-3

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,

let us throw off everything that hinders

and the sin that so easily entangles.  (NIV)

Death continues being a mystery in our faith lives. Some years ago, the master Castellanos shared wise words about death that have remained with us today: “Death is not truth, it’s the step to a fuller form of life…”

Nevertheless, this mystery still distresses us and fills us with questions without answers. It greatly saddens us to say goodbye to our loved ones, brothers and sisters of the faith. Recently in our church we bade farewell to Elder Mayda Albán Rodríguez of her earthly pilgrimage. At the service, entitled Testimony of Resurrection, her granddaughter, Elizabeth, said something that greatly moved me. She took out a crumpled piece of paper that she’d extracted from Mayda’s purse the previous night and challenged us to listen to her message in beautiful phrases that invited us to strengthen our faith through prayer. What a beautiful testimony!  

We always think we should speak and offer testimonies of those people who have shared part of their lives with us, and now aren’t here. But the challenge is to listen to their messages, although they may no longer physically be with us. May Mayda’s messages continue with us, throwing light in life’s race still ahead! We continue our journey with patience, and as the text asks us, shedding all weight. Thus, we can have a coherent life of faith and prayer together with that great cloud of witnesses.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for all those people we have had the privilege to know, and who have impacted us with testimony of faith and faithfulness to your Work. Let us be open to their messages, because they keep speaking to us even though they are no longer physically at our side. Amen.

Por tanto, nosotros también, teniendo en derredor nuestro tan Grande nube de testigos, despojémonos de todo peso y

del pecado que nos asedia, y corramos con paciencia

la carrera que tenemos por delante

Hebreos 12.1

La muerte sigue siendo un misterio en nuestra vida de fe. El maestro Castellanos hace algunos años compartió sabias palabras sobre la muerte, que nos siguen acompañando hoy: La muerte no es verdad, es el paso a una forma de vida más plena… Sin embargo, este misterio aún nos angustia y nos llena de preguntas sin respuestas. Nos entristece mucho despedir a nuestros seres queridos, hermanos y hermanas en la fe.

Recientemente despedimos en nuestra Iglesia a la Presbítera Gobernante Mayda Albán Rodríguez de su peregrinaje terrenal. En el culto que denominamos Testimonio de la resurrección su nieta Elizabeth dijo algo que me conmovió mucho. Ella sacó un papelito estrujado que extrajera la noche anterior del bolso de Mayda y nos desafió a escuchar su mensaje en hermosas frases que nos invitaban a fortalecer la fe a través de la oración. ¡Qué hermoso testimonio! Siempre pensamos que debemos hablar y ofrecer testimonios de aquellas personas que han compartido parte de la vida con nosotros y ya no están. Pero el desafío es escuchar sus mensajes, aunque ya no estén físicamente con nosotros. ¡Qué los mensajes de Mayda nos sigan acompañando y arrojando luz en la carrera de la vida que tenemos por delante! Sigamos nuestro camino con paciencia y como nos pide el texto, despojándonos de todo peso. Es así que podremos tener una vida coherente de fe y oración junto a esa gran nube de testigos.

Oración: Gracias Señor, por todas esas personas que hemos tenido el privilegio de conocer y que nos han impactado con un testimonio de fe y fidelidad a tu Obra. Permite que estemos abiertos a sus mensajes, pues nos siguen hablando aunque ya no están físicamente a nuestro lado. Amén.
