KNEELING FOR A JUST CAUSE

MARK 14: 32-41

For this reason I kneel before the Father,

from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you  

with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that  

Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

Ephesians 3:14-17 (NIV)

We all adore someone or something. We all kneel. Luther wrote: “He who does not worship the true and living God will worship an idol.” We all devote our will to a just or unjust cause, but we are all defending something. If the cause is not just, it will be unjust. We all pray for something. Prayer is not the uttering of a phrase, or a position of our body. Prayer is, in the final analysis, what we want with all our heart. Our most intimate desires are our prayers. Our desires can be good or ignoble, our intentions worthy or unworthy. Nobody can face the task of life without hopes and desires. They can be unimportant. Let’s pray! On our knees! But let’s do it to our Lord Jesus Christ for just causes, with the best intention and the best desires. Let us kneel before God as we ask that his will be done, not ours, to bring the greatest good for others, for ourselves, and for all his creation.

Prayer: Oh eternal God, who hears the prayers raised to you in Christ’s name and in your Spirit, help us understand life in terms of the noblest wishes, the most just of causes, and the most serious motivations. In Christ’s name, amen.

DE RODILLAS POR CAUSA JUSTA

MARCOS 14: 32-41

Por esta causa doblo mis rodillas al Padre

de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, del cual es nombrada

toda la parentela en los cielos y en la tierra, que os de,

conforme a las riquezas de su gloria, el ser corroborado

con potencia en el hombre interior por su Espíritu.

Efesios 3:14-17

Todos adoramos a alguien o a algo. Todos doblamos nuestras rodillas. Lutero decía: “El que no adora al verdadero y viviente Dios, adorará a un ídolo”. Todos rendimos nuestra voluntad, o bien a una causa justa o a una causa injusta, pero todos estamos, aunque no de palabras, defendiendo alguna causa. Si la causa no es justa, será injusta. Todos oramos por algo. Porque orar no es la enunciación de una frase, o la postura del cuerpo. La oración es, en última instancia, lo que deseamos con todo nuestro corazón. Nuestros deseos más íntimos constituyen nuestras oraciones. Nuestros deseos pueden ser buenos o innobles, nuestras intenciones pueden ser nobles o indignas. Nadie puede enfrentarse a la tarea de la vida  sin tener anhelos y deseos. Pueden ser deseos intrascendentes, anhelos sin mayor seriedad  e importancia. ¡Oremos! ¡Doblemos nuestras rodillas! Pero hagámoslo ante el Dios de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, por causas justas, animados con la mejor intención, y los mejores deseos. Pidamos mucho a Dios que podamos doblar nuestras rodillas por aquello que, según su voluntad y no la nuestra,  pueda significar el mayor bien para otros,  para nosotros y para toda su creación.

Oración: Oh Dios eterno, que oyes  las oraciones que se elevan ante ti en el nombre de Cristo y en su Espíritu, haznos capaces de entender la vida toda en términos de los deseos más nobles, de las causas más justas y las motivaciones más serias. Por Jesucristo, amén.
