Maundy Thursday

I HAVE GIVEN YOU AN EXAMPLE

J ohn 13: 1-5, 12-15

… Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them and to the end.  (NIV)

John 13:1

            Someone once wrote that everyone needed an experience of unconditional love to really experience what love is. One who knows he is loved for certain merits, or who has someone who loves him because he simply expects something in return, does not necessarily know what this means.

            The evangelist takes it upon himself to emphasize this characteristic of divine love. One does not love because of the other person’s merits or has earned it in some way. Love is a gift, and God loves because in his very essence he is love.

            Jesus knows that his hour has arrived and, firmly convinced of his mission, he decides to perpetuate his love giving an example in the way his followers might replicate. On putting this context into action, it is not difficult for us to imagine the multiple tensions that were experienced in those hours as his enemies closed the circle around Jesus and when he could still imagine betrayal and infidelity within his inner circle of disciples. Still, he performs an act of humility and love that would be firmly impressed by washing the feet of his friends.

            Love asks for nothing in exchange, but it requires a great capacity for emptying. That is the example we need to repeat in today’s world, over and over again.

 

Prayer: Lord, you have loved us to the moment of your total surrender. Help us to follow your example and perpetuate your love for this humanity. Amen.

EJEMPLO LES HE DADO

Juan 13: 1-5, 12-15

…como había amado a los suyos que estaban en el mundo, los amó hasta el fin.

Juan 13:1

            Alguien escribió en una ocasión que todos necesitamos una experiencia de amor incondicional para experimentar realmente lo que es el amor. Quien se sabe amado por determinados méritos, o quien tiene quien le ame porque simplemente espera algo a cambio, no necesariamente sabe lo que esto significa.

            El evangelista se encarga de enfatizar esta característica del amor divino. No se ama porque la otra persona lo merezca o lo haya ganado de alguna forma. El amor es un don, un regalo. Y Dios ama porque es amor en su misma esencia.

            Jesús sabe que su hora ha llegado y, firmemente convencido de su misión, se decide a perpetuar su amor dando un ejemplo, de modo que sus seguidores lo repliquen. Al poner en contexto esta acción, no nos es difícil imaginar las múltiples tensiones que se vivirían en aquellas horas, cuando se cerraba el cerco sobre Jesús de parte de sus enemigos y cuando este podría imaginar aún la traición y la infidelidad dentro de su círculo íntimo de discípulos. Aún así, efectúa un acto de humildad y amor que quedaría impreso firmemente al lavar los pies de sus amigos.

            Amar no pide nada a cambio, pero requiere una gran capacidad de vaciamiento. Ese es el ejemplo que necesitamos repetir en el mundo de hoy, una y otra vez.

 

Oración: Señor, nos has amado hasta el punto de tu entrega total. Ayúdanos a seguir tu ejemplo y perpetuar tu amor por esta humanidad. Amén.
