LIVING IN HOLINESS

Hebrews 12:14

And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father

1 Thessalonians 3:13a (NRSV)

            Some people think that being holy is the same as being good-natured: a person who is totally naive and is used by others. Sometimes, it’s also thought that holiness is something that applies to people who are very good, who never have done harm to anyone and who receive special treatment from God. On the other hand, there are those who say that everything related to this subject is boring and meaningless in today’s life.

            But what does the Bible have to say when it speaks of holiness? Why does it say that Jesus’ followers must be holy?

            On one of his trips a botanist discovered a plant that grows in filth and in stagnant water. It’s flowers stayed white despite the splashing they received from time to time. This is all thanks to a substance that prevents stains from adhering to its petals.

            What a great example to explain holiness because being holy doesn’t mean separating ourselves from other people, but rather remaining unstained despite temptations and difficulties. It is trying to think, feel, speak, say and do what God desires. It is asking Him every day to pardon our sins and help us to live with joy, sincerity, and peace in our hearts. That is living in holiness.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to remember that only you are holy and to live in holiness before you. Amen.

VIVIENDO EN SANTIDAD

Hebreos 12:14

...para que sean afirmados vuestros corazones, irreprensibles en santidad delante de Dios nuestro Padre

1 Tesalonicenses 3:13a

            Algunas personas creen que ser santo es lo mismo que ser bonachón: una persona totalmente ingenua y que se deja usar por los demás. A veces también se piensa que la santidad es algo que solo se aplica a gente muy buena, que nunca le ha hecho mal a nadie y que recibe un trato especial de parte de Dios. Hay quienes dicen, por otro lado, que todo lo relacionado a este tema es aburridísimo y sin sentido para la  vida actual.

            Pero ¿qué quiere decir la Biblia cuando habla de santidad? ¿Por qué dice que los seguidores de Jesús debemos ser santos?

            En uno de sus viajes, un investigador botánico descubrió una planta que crece en medio de la suciedad y el agua estancada. Sus flores  se mantienen blancas a pesar de las salpicaduras que reciben de vez en cuando. Y esto gracias a una sustancia que evita que las manchas se adhieran a sus pétalos.

            ¡Qué buen ejemplo para explicar la santidad! Porque ser santos no significa apartarnos de la gente, sino mantenernos limpios a  pesar de las tentaciones y las dificultades. Es tratar de pensar, sentir, hablar, decir y hacer lo que Dios quiere. Pedirle a Él cada día que perdone nuestros pecados y nos ayude a vivir con alegría, sinceridad y paz en el corazón. Eso es vivir en santidad.

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a reconocer que sólo tú eres Santo, y a vivir en santidad ante ti. Amén.
