Good Friday

AND HE WAS HEARD

Hebrews 5:7-9

Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews. (NIV)

            The events of the so-called Good Friday are so dramatic that they cannot leave the reader impassive. The cruelty of injustice that has framed the plot narrated in the previous chapter reaches an almost unimaginable climax after the summary trial that sought to condemn Jesus to death. That he is brought before Pilate finally confirms the sentence: death by crucifixion, as a seditionist before the Roman power.  

            What would be the logical cry of someone who is unjustly accused of so much evil, and knows that he is near to the cruelest and most ruthless death known? That was precisely one of the arguments of those who falsely accused him, saying that if he were truly the Son of God, he would call God to send his angels to defend him. 

            But the author of Hebrews claims that Jesus was heard. His reverent love allowed him to cry out to be freed from that bitter cup but he accepted his Father’s will. Therefore, he is the author of eternal salvation.

 

Prayer: Our good God, suffering the cross is the exalted way in which you have shown us your love. Make us worthy heirs of your grace. Amen.

Y FUE ESCUCHADO

Hebreos 5:7-9

Pilato escribió también un título, que puso sobre la cruz, el cual decía “Jesús nazareno, rey de los judíos”

            Los acontecimientos del llamado vienes santo son de un dramatismo que no pueden dejar impasible al lector. El ensañamiento de la injusticia que ha armado un complot de la magnitud narrada en el capítulo previo alcanza un clímax casi imaginable luego de aquel juicio sumario que buscaba condenar a Jesús a la muerte. Y es llevado ante Pilato y finalmente este confirma la sentencia: muerte por crucifixión, como un sedicioso ante el poder romano.

            ¿Cuál sería el clamor lógico de quien se ve acusado de tanto mal injustamente y se sabe próximo a la muerte más cruel y despiadada conocida? Precisamente ese era uno de los argumentos de quienes le acusaban falsamente, al decir que si fuese Hijo de Dios verdaderamente, llamaría a Dios para que enviara sus ángeles a defenderle.

            Pero el autor de Hebreos afirma que Jesús fue escuchado. Su amor reverente le permitió clamar por verse librado de aquella copa amarga pero aceptando la voluntad de su Padre. Por ello es autor de salvación eterna.

 

Oración: Nuestro buen Dios, sufrir la cruz es el modo excelso en el cual nos has mostrado tu amor. Haznos dignos herederos de tu gracia. Amén.
