THE SUIT

1 Samuel 17

David strapped his sword on over the armor, but he couldn’t walk around well because he’d never tried it before. “I can’t walk in this,” David told Saul….

            King Saul insisted that David put on his suit: a type of armor that the soldiers were accustomed to use in battle. Saul was convinced that the young man would not win over Goliath; but at least, since no one else was ready to fight, he wished to help the little warrior in some way. He wanted to put on David something that even he himself would not use. David put on Saul’s suit and tried to move, but he could not even walk. The weight of the helmet, the size of the clothing and his inexperience in the use of bellicose equipment made the young man decide to take it off and not use it to face the giant. He did not depend on the king’s resources to reach victory. He simply trusted in God and behaved in a brave manner, using the abilities that he had learned during his work as a shepherd of the sheep.

            A very important teaching is enclosed in this story: we should not accept the molds that others want to put on us. At times, people with a desire to help tell us what to do or stuff like that. We must think for ourselves and consider what God wants for our life. What talents and gifts did God give us? Let us listen to the counsel, but let us live according to what God hopes of us.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to live our life according to what you ask of us, to what you want of us. Amen.

Y ciñó David su espada sobre sus vestidos, y probó a andar, porque nunca había hecho la prueba. Y dijo David a Saúl: yo no puedo andar con esto...

            El rey Saúl insistía en que David se pusiera su traje: una especie de armadura que los soldados acostumbraban utilizar en la batalla. Saúl estaba convencido de que el muchacho no podría vencer a Goliat; pero al menos, ya que nadie estaba dispuesto a combatir, deseaba ayudar de alguna manera al pequeño guerrero. Quería imponerle algo que ni él mismo emplearía. David se colocó el traje de Saúl e intentó moverse, pero ni siquiera podía caminar. El peso del casco, el tamaño de aquella ropa y la inexperiencia en el uso del equipamiento bélico, hicieron que el joven decidiera sacarse eso de encima y no usarlo para enfrentar al gigante. No dependió de los recursos del rey para lograr la victoria. Sencillamente confió en Dios y se comportó de una manera valiente, utilizando las habilidades que había aprendido durante su trabajo como pastor de ovejas.

 

            Esta historia encierra una enseñanza muy importante: no aceptemos los moldes que los demás quieren imponernos. A veces la gente, con ánimos de ayudar, nos dirá que debemos hacer o cosas por el estilo. Debemos pensar por nosotros mismos y considerar lo que Dios desea para nuestra vida. ¿Qué talentos y dones Él nos dio? Escuchemos los consejos, pero vivamos de acuerdo a lo que Dios espera de nosotros.

 

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a vivir nuestra vida de acuerdo a lo que tú nos pides, a lo que tú quieres de nosotros. Amén.
