SEEING IS BELIEVING!

John 20:19-31

Jesus replied, “Do you believe because you see me? Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe.”

John 20:29 (CEB)

            The appearance of the resurrected Christ took away the disciples’ fear. They were convinced that He was the same Jesus that had been crucified a few days before, as the wounds in his hands and his side proved.

            Jesus was not hard on Thomas in spite of his doubts. In spite of his skepticism, Thomas continued being faithful to the brothers in the faith and to Jesus himself. Some have to doubt before believing. If doubt motivates questions, and these elicit correct answers, it has completed a positive task. On the other hand, when doubt is converted into obstinacy that becomes chronic, doubt hurts faith. When you doubt, don’t stay there.  Let the doubt deepen your faith as you search for the answer.

            Some people think that they will believe in Jesus if they see a miracle or a definite sign.  But Jesus says that blessed are those who believe without seeing. We have all the proof that we need in the words of the Bible and in the testimony of believers. A physical appearance would not make Jesus more real than he already is now. In order to understand the life and mission of Jesus with more breadth, all we have to do is to study the Gospels. John tells us that he has included only some of the many signs that Jesus did on earth. But that which is written is all that we need to know to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, through whom we receive eternal life. 

 

Prayer: Lord, do not allow us to mistrust you during our toils. Fill us with your Holy Spirit.  In the name of Jesus, Amen.

¡VER PARA CREER!

            La aparición del Cristo resucitado disipó los temores de los discípulos. Ellos estaban convencidos de que Él era el mismo Jesús que había sido crucificado unos pocos días antes, como lo probaban las heridas en sus manos y costado.

            Jesús no fue duro con Tomás a pesar de sus dudas. A pesar de su escepticismo, Tomás seguía siendo fiel a los hermanos en la fe y a Jesús mismo. Algunos necesitan dudar antes de creer. Si la duda motiva preguntas, y estas provocan las respuestas acertadas, ha cumplido una labor positiva. En cambio, cuando la duda se convierte en terquedad y esta se vuelve crónica, la duda daña la fe. Cuando dude, no se detenga allí. Deje que la duda profundice su fe a medida que busca la respuesta.

            Algunas personas piensan que creerían en Jesús si vieran un milagro o una señal categórica. Pero Jesús dice que son dichosos los que creen sin ver. Tenemos todas las pruebas que necesitamos en las palabras de la Biblia y en el testimonio de los creyentes. Una aparición física no haría a Jesús más real de lo que ahora es. Para comprender la vida y misión de Jesús con mayor amplitud, todo lo que tenemos que hacer es estudiar los Evangelios. Juan nos dice que ha recogido solo algunas de las muchas señales que hizo Jesús en la tierra. Pero lo que está escrito es todo lo que nos hace falta saber para creer que Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, por medio del cual recibimos vida eterna.

 

Oración: Señor no permitas que durante nuestros afanes desconfiemos de ti. Llénanos con tu Espíritu santo. En el nombre de Jesús, amén.
