Pentecost Sunday

THE DAY OF PENTECOST

Acts 2:1-11

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability.

            Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, or the Festival of Weeks, was one of the biggest celebrations of the year, a festival of thanksgiving for the harvest. The Holy Spirit came when Jews from different nations gathered in Jerusalem for this festival.

            This was the fulfillment of the words of John the Baptist about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire. Why tongues of fire? Tongues symbolize the message and communication of the Gospel. Fire denotes the purifying presence of God, which consumes the undesirable elements of our lives, lighting in our hearts the flame that ignites the lives of others.

            Pentecost forms a scenario of enormous importance in the history of the Church. To this  extraordinary something, Jesus referred when shortly before his ascension, he warned the disciples not to leave Jerusalem until he arrived on this day. It is precisely now that the people of God can be said to be renewed and the history of the establishment of the Christian movement will begin, for it is now that the Holy Spirit visibly descends to give it life and set it in motion. The disciples, previously timid, are transformed into courageous proclaimers of Christ.  This Presence of God in power is a crucial moment in the life of the community because it reflects its importance among the most impressive events in sacred history.

 

Prayer:  Lord, let your Holy Spirit fill us, making us better Christians in our families and communities. Amen.

EL DIA DE PENTECOSTES

Hechos 2:1-11

....y todos quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu hacía que hablaran.

Hechos 2:4

            Pentecostés, cincuenta días después de la Pascua, o Fiesta de las Semanas, fue una de las tres mayores celebraciones del año, una fiesta de agradecimiento por las cosechas. El Espíritu Santo vino cuando judíos de diferentes naciones se congregaban en Jerusalén para esta fiesta.

            Este fue el cumplimiento de las palabras de Juan el Bautista acerca del bautismo del Espíritu Santo y fuego. ¿Por qué lenguas de fuego? Las lenguas simbolizan el mensaje y la comunicación del Evangelio. El fuego denota la presencia purificadora de Dios, que consume los elementos indeseables de nuestras vidas, encendiendo en nuestros corazones la llama que inflame la vida de otros.

            Pentecostés forma un escenario de enorme trascendencia en la historia de la iglesia. A ello, como a algo extraordinario, se refería Jesucristo cuando, poco antes de la ascensión, avisaba a los discípulos de que no se ausentasen de Jerusalén hasta que llegara este día. Es ahora precisamente cuando puede decirse que se renueva el pueblo de Dios y va a comenzar la historia del establecimiento del movimiento cristiano, pues es ahora cuando el Espíritu Santo desciende visiblemente para darle la vida y ponerlo en movimiento. Los discípulos, antes tímidos,  se transforman en valientes proclamadores de Cristo. Esta presencia de Dios en poder es un momento crucial en la vida de la comunidad, porque refleja su importancia entre los eventos más impactantes en la historia sagrada.

 

Oración: Señor, que tu Espíritu Santo nos llene, haciéndonos mejores cristianos en nuestras  familias y comunidades. Amén
