WITHOUT ANY UNNECESSARY FEARS

1 John 4:16-21

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea

            There can be no doubt that we live in times where fears abound. One may be afraid to leave the house because of the pandemic. Another is worried about how the world situation will affect his pocketbook. There are even those who are afraid of themselves. One of the evils of our modern society is precisely in the way that fear is sown everywhere and people seek refuge in the first thing they find that they think will be useful to them.

            God’s Word is an invitation to not be afraid. “Do not fear” is a formula that is repeated many times throughout the Bible. God resorts to this expression in order to provide security in the midst of any situation, and in the scriptures we see vivid examples of people who overcame fear by trusting in God’s word. Jesus Christ also insisted and encouraged his followers not to be afraid, only to have faith.

            It’s so hard to understand those who see in the biblical God a punishing super being always prepared to watch whoever strays from the norms in order to apply the severest penalties. In his epistle, John says that the one who is afraid has not been perfected in love. There may be fear, but we shouldn’t give place to it in our lives. God is love, and that is an affirmation more than sufficient to give us hope and peace.

 

Prayer: Good God, thank you for your love and mercy which have made us your children. Amen.

SIN TEMORES INNECESARIOS

1 Juan 4:16-21

Por tanto, no temeremos aunque la tierra sea removida y se traspasen los montes al corazón del mar

Salmo 46:2

            No cabe dudas que vivimos tiempos donde los temores pululan. Hay quien tiene miedo de salir de su casa debido a la pandemia; hay quien tiene miedo de la situación mundial y de cuánto puede afectarle a su bolsillo; hay quienes, incluso, temen de sí mismos. Uno de los males de la sociedad moderna está precisamente en esta manera en la que se siembran miedos por doquier y la gente anda buscando refugio en lo que primero crea le sea útil.

            La Palabra de Dios es una invitación a no temer. El “no temáis” es una fórmula que se repite en múltiples ocasiones a lo largo de la Biblia. Dios recurre a esta expresión para dar seguridad en medio de cualquier circunstancia, y en las Escrituras encontramos ejemplos vívidos de personas que ante el temor se sobrepusieron pues confiaron en la palabra de Dios. Jesucristo también insistía y animaba a sus seguidores a no temer, solo confiar.

            Cuesta trabajo por eso entender a quienes ven en el Dios bíblico a un súper ente castigador, siempre listo a observar quien se sale de las normas para aplicar las más severas penas. El que teme, dice Juan en su epístola, no ha sido perfeccionado en el amor. El temor puede que llegue, pero no hay que darle cabida en nuestras vidas. Dios es amor, y esa es una afirmación más que suficiente para darnos esperanza y paz.

 

Oración: Gracias buen Dios por tu gracia y tu misericordia con la cual nos has hecho tus hijas e hijos. Amén.
