THE SIN OF FOOLISHNESS

Luke 12:13-21

And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”

Luke 12:15 (NRSV)

            I find it a great challenge to think about my daughter and her friends from school. One of the moments that causes me the most anxiety and annoyance is when I feel that they are focused on their own interests, so as not to pay attention to me. I think of the teacher who has thirty students in her classroom everyday with different characteristics and family backgrounds.

            Something like this must have been felt by Jesus with his disciples. The Master devoted much of his time to teaching them about trust in  God, thus trying to make his followers understand the need to treasure what is truly important: a spirituality committed to the good news, a life of service to God and to neighbor. However, some did not understand him. They didn’t listen to him because they had their own priorities. This is  the foolishness of which Jesus spoke, which results from focusing on our own well-being and security, pretending to secure our lives with all kinds of idols: power, money, status. No doubt those goods are just the vanity of vanities.

            Will we be like those who are about their own business, and who do not listen or understand? Let’s not commit the sin of foolishness wanting to “win our life”, because that way we will lose it. Rather let us lose our lives for Christ and we will feel rich in God

 

Prayer: Our God. Let us be attentive to your signs, to your messages, so that our discipleship is consistent and committed. Help us to stop focusing  on what is vain and perishable, to embrace a faith that launches us into service, into genuine love, the only treasure that makes us live life to the fullest, Amen

EL PECADO DE LA INSESATEZ

Lucas 12:13-21

También les dijo: Manténganse atentos y cuídense de toda avaricia, porque la vida del hombre no depende de los muchos bienes que posea

            Me resulta un gran reto repasar a mi hija y sus amigas de la escuela. Uno de los momentos que me produce mayor ansiedad y molestia es cuando siento que están centradas en sus intereses para no prestarme atención. Pienso en su maestra que cada día tiene treinta estudiantes en el aula con diferentes características y trasfondos familiares.

            Algo así debe haber sentido Jesús con sus discípulos. El Maestro dedicaba gran parte de su tiempo a enseñarles sobre la confianza en Dios, tratando así de que sus seguidores comprendieran la necesidad de atesorar lo verdaderamente importante: una espiritualidad comprometida con su buena noticia, una vida de servicio a Dios y al prójimo. Sin embargo, algunos no le entendían. No le escuchaban pues tenían sus propias prioridades. Esta es la insensatez de la que hablaba Jesús, que resulta de centrarnos en nuestro propio bienestar y seguridad, pretendiendo asegurar nuestras vidas con toda clase de ídolos: poder, dinero, status. Sin duda esos bienes son solo vanidad de vanidades.

            ¿Seremos como esos que suelen estar dedicados a sus propios asuntos, y que no escuchan ni entienden? No cometamos el pecado de la insensatez queriendo “ganar nuestra vida”, pues así la perderemos. Más bien perdamos la vida por Cristo y nos sentiremos ricos para con Dios.

 

Oración: Dios nuestro, permite que estemos atentos a tus señales, a tus mensajes, para que nuestro discipulado sea coherente y comprometido. Ayúdanos a dejar de centrarnos en lo vano y perecedero, para poder abrazar una fe que nos lance al servicio, al amor genuino, único tesoro que nos hace vivir la vida a plenitud. Amén.
