COURAGE FOR DIFFICULT TIMES

Exodus 32: 1-14

“Come on! Make us gods who can lead us. As for this man Moses who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we don’t have a clue what has happened to him.”

Exodus 32: 1b (CEB)

            The image of the people who had left slavery in Egypt, now complaining to Aaron and asking him to make a god who would guide them because this Moses was taking so long to return from the mountain, reminds me of our weak trust in God in difficult times.

            Rarely when we are traversing hard times do we start to think how much of a responsibility we have for what is happening. Looking at the horrors of this world: sickness, death, war, etc., many people ask why God allows these things to happen and there are few who think these things are the consequence of our actions.

            Human beings have lorded it over that which God offers us to protect–our relationships and our coexistence with animals, plants and all the way up to other humans.

            We forget “this God” who created us to co-participate. We prefer to blame God and to make ourselves a golden calf to worship because it will enable us to be less responsible.

 

Prayer: Good Lord, allow us to be faithful in the hard times, and in all times. Amen.

VALOR PARA LOS TIEMPOS DIFICILES

Exodo 32: 1-14

…fabrícanos un Dios que nos guíe, porque no sabemos que habrá sido de ese Moisés que nos sacó del país de Egipto

Éxodo 32: 1b

            La imagen del pueblo, que había salido de la esclavitud de Egipto, quejándose ante Aarón y pidiéndole que le fabricara un Dios que los guiara porque “ese” Moisés se demoraba mucho en volver de la montaña, en mucho me recuerda nuestra escuálida confianza en Dios en los tiempos difíciles.

            Pocas veces, cuando atravesamos malos tiempos, nos ponemos a pensar cuánto de responsabilidad tenemos en lo que está pasando. Ante los horrores de este mundo: enfermedades, muertes, guerras, etc., son muchos los que preguntan por qué Dios permite que pasen estas cosas y pocos son los que piensan que, muchas veces, es la consecuencia de nuestros actos.

            El ser humano se ha enseñoreado sobre lo que Dios le ofreció para proteger; las relaciones, la convivencia, los animales, las plantas y hasta otros seres humanos.

            Nos olvidamos de “ese Dios” que nos creó para coparticipar, preferimos culparlo y hacernos un becerro de oro al que adorar porque nos hará menos responsables.

 

Oración: Permítenos, buen Señor, serte fieles en los malos tiempos, y en todo momento. Amén.
