TO CONQUER THE WORLD

1 John 5:2-4

for whatever is born of God conquers the world.

1 John 5:4 (NRSV)

            The biblical authors use the term world with meanings that vary according to context. Therefore, world in the Bible can mean, among other things, the universe created by God, the inhabited world, the humanity loved by God, or that which is contrary to God. The “world” we are asked to overcome is the hostile world of hatred, prejudices, injustices, vices, selfishness and idolatry. According to the author of this letter, we must not love “that world” nor what is in it. To defeat it it’s not necessary to have money, social position or a special level of scholarship. John tells us that it’s only enough to obey God’s commandments and to live by faith.

            Ask yourself if a new birth has been wrought in you, because only then will you be able to separate yourself from that which is not of God, from discouragement, depression and fear. Trying to obey the divine will, obeying his commandments and loving God and neighbor as yourself, allows us to be on the correct path for conquering the world.

 

Prayer: Lord, grant me the strength to cry out for justice, the patience to work for peace, and the will to obey your commandments. Amen.

PARA VENCER AL MUNDO

Todo el que es hijo de Dios vence al mundo

1 Juan 5:4

            Los autores bíblicos utilizan el término mundo con significados que varían según el contexto. Por lo tanto, mundo en la Biblia puede significar, entre otros, el universo creado por Dios, la tierra habitada, la humanidad a la que Dios ama, o aquello que es contrario a Dios. El “mundo” al que se nos pide que venzamos es el mundo hostil del odio, los prejuicios, las injusticias, los vicios, los egoísmos y las idolatrías. Según el autor de esta carta, no debemos amar “ese mundo” ni lo que hay en él. Para derrotarlo no es necesario tener dinero, posición social o un determinado nivel de escolaridad. En el texto de hoy, Juan nos dice que solo basta obedecer los mandamientos de Dios y vivir por la fe.

            Pregúntate si se ha obrado en ti un nuevo nacimiento, pues solo así podrás apartarte de todo lo que no es de Dios, del desánimo, las depresiones y el miedo. Procura obedecer la voluntad divina, obedecer sus mandamientos y amar a Dios y al prójimo como a ti mismo, nos permitirán estar en el camino correcto para vencer al mundo.

 

Oración: Concédeme, Señor, fuerza para gritar por la justicia, paciencia para trabajar por la paz y voluntad para obedecer tus mandatos. Amén.
