WATER WILL SPRING FORTH FROM THE ROCK

Exodus 17:1-7

…I Will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock and water will come out of it for the people to drink. So, Moses did this in the sight of the elders. (NIV)

Exodus 17:6

This incident occurs during the exodus from their servitude in  Egypt, proceeding toward the promised land. The desert of Sinai, through which they approached this valley, is very barren, and looks extremely dry and thirsty, containing little or no water, hardly even a few stunted bushes. The lack of water caused great suffering for the Israelites, so their behavior was unrestrained: it was equivalent to “tempting God.”

Moses cried out to the Lord, and his language, instead of showing signs of resentment or vindictive imprecation against the people who had treated him with cruel and unmerited treatment, was the expression of an anxious desire to know what was best to do in these circumstances. God told him not to hit the rebels, rather to strike the rock; not that it might strew a stream of blood from the offender’s chest, but a stream of water from the granite crag. And from the smitten rock a stream of pure and refreshing water immediately flowed, which was Moses’ greatest miracle.

Prayer: God of life, help us to trust in you during our journey toward liberation. We give you thanks for your provision, especially for the living water you offer us in the midst of the desert of our desperation. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, “the water of life.” Amen.
