EXAM WITH A TRAP

Psalm 119:129-136

            On one occasion a professor undertook an experiment regarding human behavior with two groups of students. The objective was to verify whether or not they cheated under certain circumstances. However, the students didn’t know that that was the principal objective of those exams. Everything was organized in such a way that the groups could easily cheat. Before giving the exam, one group of participants was asked to recall and write down the Ten Commandments, as best they were able. To his surprise, no one in this group cheated. But in the other group, which evaluated other subjects, yes, there were some who cheated.

            Remembering a moral reference pattern made all the difference. Centuries ago, the psalmist understood the need for a moral benchmark and asked for divine help in following it. He prayed to the Lord, “Order my steps with your word, and let no iniquity have domination over me, and teach me your statutes.”

            The experiment of the exam illustrates our need for moral guidance. The Lord has given us his word as a lamp at our feet and a luminary for our journey to direct us in our moral elections.

 

Prayer: Lord, may our actions be as upright as your statutes, direct our lives, orient and conduct our steps at all times. Amen.

EL EXAMEN CON TRAMPA

Salmo 119:129-136
Ordena mis pasos con tu palabra, y ninguna iniquidad se enseñoree de mí

Salmo 119:133

            En una ocasión un profesor realizó un experimento a dos grupos de alumnos sobre el comportamiento humano. El objetivo era comprobar si hacían fraude o no, bajo determinadas circunstancias. Sin embargo, ellos no sabían que ese era el principal objetivo de esos exámenes. Todo fue organizado de tal modo que los grupos pudieran hacer trampa fácilmente. Antes de dar el examen, a un grupo de los participantes se les pidió que recordaran y anotaran los Diez Mandamientos, hasta donde pudieran. Para su asombro, ¡nadie de este grupo cometió fraude!

            Pero en el otro grupo, que evaluaron otros temas, sí hubo quienes hicieron trampa. Recordar un patrón de referencia moral marcó la diferencia. Siglos atrás, el salmista entendió la necesidad de un patrón de referencia moral y pidió ayuda divina para seguirlo. Oró al Señor: Ordena mis pasos con tu palabra, y ninguna iniquidad se enseñoree de mí… y enséñame tus estatutos.

            El experimento del examen ilustra nuestra necesidad de guía moral. El Señor nos ha dado su Palabra como una lámpara a nuestros pies y una lumbrera a nuestro camino para dirigirnos en nuestras elecciones morales.

 

Oración: Señor, que nuestras acciones sean rectas como tus estatutos, dirige nuestra vida, oriéntanos y conduce nuestros pasos en todo momento. Amén.
