FOR DIFFICULT TIMES

Exodus 32: 1-14

“Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

Exodus 32: 1b (NRSV)

            The image of the people, who had come out of slavery in Egypt, complaining to Aaron and asking him to make a God to guide them because “that” Moses took so long to return from the mountain, reminds me of our meager trust in God in difficult times.

            Rarely when humans encounter evil times do we stop to think about how much responsibility we have for what is happening. Confronting the horrors of this world, sickness, death, wars, etc. many ask why God allows these things to happen, and there are few who often think that it is the result of our own actions.

            Humanity has lorded it over what God offered for protection: relationships, coexistence, animals, plants, and even other human beings.

            We forget about “that God” who created us for participation; we prefer to blame him and make ourselves a golden calf to worship because it will make us less responsible.

 

Prayer: Lord, grant that we may be faithful in hard times. Amen.

PARA LOS TIEMPOS DIFICILES

Exodo 32: 1-14

…fabrícanos un Dios que nos guíe, porque no sabemos que habrá sido de ese Moisés  que nos sacó del país de Egipto

Éxodo 32: 1b

            La imagen del pueblo, quienes habían salido de la esclavitud de Egipto, quejándose ante Aarón y pidiéndole que le fabricara un Dios que los guiara porque “ese” Moisés se demoraba mucho en volver de la montaña, en mucho me recuerda nuestra escuálida confianza en Dios en tiempos difíciles.

            Pocas veces cuando los seres humanos atravesamos malos tiempos  nos ponemos a pensar cuánto de responsabilidad tenemos en lo que está pasando. Ante los horrores de este mundo: enfermedades, muertes, guerras, etc., son muchos los que preguntan por qué Dios permite que pasen estas cosas y pocos son los que piensan que, muchas veces, es la respuesta a nuestros actos.

La humanidad se ha enseñoreado sobre lo que Dios le ofreció para proteger: las relaciones, la convivencia, los animales, las plantas  y hasta otros seres humanos.

            Nos olvidamos de “ese Dios” que nos creó para coparticipar, preferimos culparlo y hacernos un becerro de oro al que adorar porque nos hará menos responsables.

 

Oración: Permítenos, Señor, serte fieles en los malos tiempos. Amén.
