JESUS: THE GOOD SHEPHERD

John 10:10-14

 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  (NIV)

Jesus knew a great deal about the shepherd’s life. In some way, every good Jew would have had the experience of being a shepherd. The crook, the sandals, and the horn were familiar to Christ. In the performance of his solitary duty, the shepherd’s work must be considered to be among the noblest of the land. An upright person is needed in order to be a good shepherd. The shepherd literally must be willing to give his life to and for the flock.

The shepherd has the responsibility of guiding the sheep to pastures and tranquil waters; he safeguards them in a secure place to spend the night. He gives a name to each one of them, and he loves them. He stays alert to avoid the treacherous attack of rapacious animals; he’s prepared at any moment to defend his precious treasure, the sheep. Only his faithfulness preserves the flock from ruin.

In one of his most memorable statements, Jesus compares himself to a shepherd. “I am the Good Shepherd.” Where could we find a more penetrating allegory? It works in a dramatic form for each one of us. Are we really sheep in his meadow?    

 

Prayer: Lord, today we ask that we may be able to follow Jesus as our Shepherd. Amen.

JESUS: EL BUEN PASTOR

Juan 10:10-14

Yo soy el buen pastor, el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas

Jesús sabía mucho acerca de la vida de los pastores. Todo buen judío debía haber tenido en alguna oportunidad la experiencia de ser pastor. El cayado, las sandalias y el cuerno eran familiares para Cristo. En la realización de su solitaria tarea, el trabajo del pastor tiene que ser calificado entre las ocupaciones más nobles de la tierra. Se necesita una persona íntegra para que pueda ser un buen pastor. El pastor literalmente tiene que estar dispuesto a dar su vida a ellas y por ellas.

El pastor tiene  la responsabilidad de guiar las ovejas a pastos y aguas tranquilos, las resguarda en un lugar seguro para pasar la noche. Él da un nombre a cada una de ellas y las quiere. Se mantiene alerta para evitar el ataque traidor de animales rapaces, está preparado en cualquier momento para defender aquello que es suyo, su preciado tesoro: sus ovejas. Sólo su fidelidad preserva el rebaño de la ruina.

En una de sus figuras más impresionantes Jesús se compara a sí mismo con un pastor: Yo soy el Buen Pastor. ¿Dónde podríamos encontrar una alegoría más penetrante? Funciona en forma dramática para cada uno de nosotros.  ¿Somos realmente ovejas de su prado?

 

Oración: Señor, hoy te pedimos que seamos capaces de seguir a Jesús como nuestro Pastor. Amén.
