FEAR OF THE LORD INCREASES DAILY

Proverbs 10:27-32

The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.  (NIV)

Proverbs 10:27

Of this there’s no doubt.  The fear of the Lord leads to virtuous habits, and these prevent that waste of life that comes from sin and vice. The holy tranquility that springs from faith in the Lord Jesus also greatly helps a man when he is ill. Every doctor is glad to have a patient whose spirit is completely calm. Worry kills, but trust in God is like a healthy medicine.

We have, then, all the means for a long life, and if it’s really for our good, we will grow old and come to the grave like sheaves of wheat in due time. Let us not expect a quick death the moment our finger aches, but rather expect to work for a considerable length of life.

What if we were soon called to a higher sphere? There will certainly be nothing to regret in such an estimate; rather it would be cause for rejoicing. Living or dying we belong to the Lord. If we live, Jesus will be with us; and if we die, we will be with Jesus.

 

Prayer: Lord and God, while we live, may we not waste time; but use us each minute for the most elevated ends. May it be so this day. Amen.

EL TEMOR DE JEHOVÁ AUMENTA LOS DÍAS

Proverbios 10:27-32

El temor de Jehová aumentará los días; más los años de los impíos serán acortados

De esto no cabe duda. El temor del Señor conduce a costumbres virtuosas y éstas impiden ese derroche de la vida que viene del pecado y del vicio. La tranquilidad santa que brota de la fe en el Señor Jesús también ayuda grandemente a un hombre cuando está enfermo. Todo médico se alegra de tener un enfermo cuyo espíritu está del todo tranquilo. La preocupación mata, pero la confianza en Dios es como una medicina saludable.

Tenemos entonces todos los medios para una vida larga y, si es realmente para nuestro bien, envejeceremos y vendremos al sepulcro como gavillas de trigo en su tiempo. No esperemos una muerte rápida al momento que nos duele un dedo, sino más bien contemos con trabajar durante una vida de considerable largura.

¿Y si fuésemos llamados pronto a una esfera más elevada? Ciertamente no habrá nada que lamentar en tal estimación;  más bien sería causa de regocijo. Viviendo o muriendo somos del Señor. Si vivimos, Jesús estará con nosotros; y si morimos, estaremos con Jesús.

 

Oración: Señor y Dios, permite que mientras vivamos no malgastemos el tiempo, sino que  usemos cada minuto para los fines más elevados. Que así sea este día. Amén.
