LEARNING TO DISCERN

Mark 2:23-28

But test everything; hold fast to what is good

1 Thessalonians 5:21 (NRSV)

Sometimes it is useful to remind people that the meal is not an end in itself, but rather a way of keeping the body in good health; to remember too that money is for the people, not the other way around. Jesus had to deal with the confusion of many about the Sabbath, the day of rest. He was not to become an oppressive idol and gain false autonomy.

Technology is a powerful force today. It is a possession that can easily possess us for a time, leaving us with a lack of freedom, and dominated by its seductive stimuli and promise of control. People lose themselves in the Internet. Television can become an addiction as is the same with other things that can turn people into slaves, including a job. But let’s not attack technology in and of itself. To live in the Spirit is to try to clarify what is really important in the first place, to clarify the means and the ends, to discern how the marvels of technology can be used to humanize our lives and bring us closer to God. We should not be afraid of new technologies, rather we have the obligation to use them appropriately in our mission as evangelizers. Not knowing how to best use this powerful medium brings upon us the justified accusation of negligence. If Paul were alive today, might he not have been on television and sent his epistles by way of the Internet?

 

Prayer: Lord, give me the wisdom and power of discernment to find what is truly good. Amen.

APRENDER A DISCERNIR

Marcos 2:23-28

Sométanlo todo a prueba y retengan lo bueno.

1 Tesalonicenses 5:21

A veces es conveniente recordarle a la gente que la comida no es un fin en sí misma, sino una forma de mantener el cuerpo en buena salud; recordar también que el dinero es para la gente, no al revés. Jesús tuvo que tratar con la confusión de muchos respecto al Sabbath, el día de reposo. No debía convertirse en un ídolo opresor y ganar una falsa autonomía.

La tecnología es una fuerza poderosa hoy en día. Es una posesión que fácilmente puede poseernos a su vez, dejándonos sin libertad y dominados por su seductor estímulo y promesa de control. La gente se pierde en Internet. La televisión puede convertirse en una adicción, y así tantas otras cosas que convierten a las personas en esclavas, incluido un trabajo. Pero no ataquemos a la tecnología de por sí.

Vivir en el Espíritu es tratar de poner lo realmente importante en primer lugar, clarificar medios y fines, discernir cómo las maravillas de la tecnología pueden ser utilizadas para humanizar nuestra vida y acercarnos más a Dios. No debemos temer a las nuevas tecnologías, más bien tenemos la obligación de usarlas apropiadamente en nuestra misión de evangelizadores. No saber usar este medio poderoso  trae sobre nosotros la justificada acusación de negligencia. Si Pablo estuviera vivo hoy, ¿acaso no saldría en televisión y enviaría sus epístolas vía Internet?

 

Oración: Señor, dame sabiduría y poder de discernimiento para encontrar lo que es realmente bueno. Amén.
