CONFESSION OF SIN

1 John 1: 6-8

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:8 (NRSV)

We Presbyterians have a certain problem in dealing with issues related to sin. It is true that our liturgies do not lack a time for confession but, in general, it is something rather routine and stereotyped. How much do we really feel we are sinners?

Catholic practice links confession to going before a priest for absolution with certain requirements in between.

Within our Reformed tradition the practice obeys the need for recognition of ever-present human sin. Sin is understood as an obstacle to our communion with one another and with God.

Leafing through a prayer book by Old Testament scholar, Walter Brueggemann, we find his mention of  the sad reality of our constant distortion of the biblical God. He affirms that we go about making interpretations that suit us, we distort the divine order as it is presented to us. Our nature continues to ignore our sinfulness in our attempt to be “godlike”.

Let us not make ourselves gods. Let us humbly present our sins to God and cry out for our restoration.

 

Prayer: Holy God, lead us not into the temptation of being comfortable with our own versions of how to fulfill your will. Give us humble hearts to confess our faults and to obey you. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

CONFESION DE PECADOS

1  Juan 1: 6-10

Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad

1 Juan 1:7

Los presbiterianos tenemos cierto problema para tratar los temas relacionados con el pecado, cierto es que en nuestras liturgias no falta un tiempo para la confesión pero, por lo general, es algo más bien rutinario y estereotipado. ¿Cuán realmente nos sentimos pecadores?

La práctica católica vincula la confesión al presentarse ante un sacerdote, para que este sentencie la absolución con determinados requisitos por medio.

Dentro de nuestra tradición reformada la práctica obedece a la necesidad de reconocimiento del pecado humano, siempre presente, como obstáculo para nuestra comunión de unos con otros, y con Dios.

Hojeando un libro de oraciones de Walter Brueggemann, este especialista en Antiguo Testamento menciona la triste realidad de nuestro constante distorsionar al Dios bíblico; él afirma que vamos haciendo interpretaciones que nos acomoden, tergiversamos la orden divina tal como se nos presenta. Nuestra naturaleza sigue desconociendo nuestra pecaminosidad en ese intento de ser “como dioses”.

No nos hagamos dioses ajenos, humildemente presentemos nuestros pecados a Dios y clamemos por nuestra restauración.

 

Oración: Dios santo, no nos dejes caer en la tentación de sentirnos cómodos con nuestras propias versiones de cómo cumplir tu voluntad. Danos corazones humildes para confesar nuestras faltas, y obedecerte. Por Jesucristo. Amén.
