THE UNWARY DOVE

Hosea 7:11-16

Ephraim is like a dove, easily deceived and senseless

Hosea 7:11

When doves are frightened, they react with utter terror and confusion. Perhaps this is the reason that Hosea compared Israel with an unwary dove. Although warned by God not to do so, the Israelites rushed headlong into international alliances, swinging between Egypt and Assyria for help. Their behavior constituted what James 1:8 describes as double mindedness. They professed their faith in God but they continued to worship idols. When they saw the impending disaster at the hands of invading armies, the Israelites cried out to Jehovah for help, but they did not repent of their sins. They returned to the proper religious observances but did not give up the bad practices they had picked up from their pagan neighbors. As a result, they did not truly trust in the Lord. Their recourse was to flee in panic.

Many people today make the same mistake. They say they love God, but they want the sinful pleasures offered by the impiety of the world. In times of distress, they appeal to God asking for help, but at the same time they consult religious impostors instead of the Bible. They want a very permissive religion, without ethical demands.

God does not tolerate double mindedness. We need an unconditional surrender to the Lord and a sincere repentance of our sins in order to bring ourselves wholeheartedly to Christ.

 

Prayer: Thank you, O God, for you are present in our lives and you are with us in both good times and bad. Amen.

LA PALOMA INCAUTA

Oseas 7:11-16

Efraín fue como paloma incauta, sin entendimiento.

Oseas 7:11

Cuando las palomas se asustan reaccionan con un terror totalmente atolondrado. Quizás esta sea la razón de que Oseas comparara a Israel con una paloma incauta. Aunque advertidos por Dios para que no lo hicieran, los israelitas se lanzaron  atolondradamente a establecer alianzas internacionales, oscilando entre Egipto y Asiria en pos de auxilio. Su conducta constituyó lo que Santiago 1:8 califica de doble ánimo. Profesaban su fe en Dios pero seguían adorando ídolos. Cuando vieron lo inminente  del desastre que se les avecinaba a manos de los ejércitos invasores, los israelitas clamaron a Jehová pero no se arrepintieron de sus pecados. Volvieron a las observancias religiosas apropiadas, pero no dejaron todas las malvadas prácticas recogidas de sus vecinos paganos. Como resultado, no confiaron verdaderamente en el Señor. Su recurso fue el de huir llenos de pánico.

Muchas personas hoy cometen el mismo error. Dicen amar a Dios, pero desean los placeres pecaminosos ofrecidos por la impiedad del mundo. En tiempos de angustia claman a Dios pidiendo socorro, pero al mismo tiempo consultan impostores religiosos en lugar de la Biblia. Quieren una religión muy permisiva, sin exigencias éticas.

Dios no tolera doblez de ánimo. Necesitamos una rendición incondicional al Señor, un arrepentimiento sincero de nuestros pecados para entregarnos de todo corazón a Cristo.

 

Oración: Gracias Oh Dios, porque tú estás presente en nuestras vidas y nos acompañas en los buenos y los malos tiempos. Amén.
