New Wine, New Wineskins

Luke 5: 33-39

And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, ‘The old is good.’

Traditions are the connecting threads of religion, that network that connects generations and safeguards the essence of identity. For many church people fulfilling the traditions “to the letter of the law” becomes a major vocation.

However, it is important to have the maturity to identify when we are defending this “essence” and when, in his name, we hold rigid positions which end up in exercising incorrect judgments about other people and limiting their work in our communities.

Jesus came one day to teach us that the essence of Christianity is love and that love of our neighbor is not separate from the love of God.

May that good God give us the wisdom to think primarily of our neighbor, before judging and reproducing rigidities that often depend more on history and human convenience than on the teachings of Christ.

 

Prayer: Good God, may your love be in our hearts so that we may teach the next generation fewer rules and more of the goodness and love that Jesus taught us. Amen.

A vino nuevo, Odres nuevos

Lucas 5: 33-39

A vino nuevo, odres nuevos. Nadie que cate vino añejo quiere del nuevo, pues dirá: ´´Está bueno el añejo´´.

Las tradiciones son uno de esos hilos conductores de las religiones, esa red         que conecta generaciones, y salvaguarda la “esencia” de las identidades. Para muchas personas dentro de las iglesias cumplirlas ´´al pie de la letra´´ se convierte en sumayor vocación.

Sin embargo, es importante tener la madurez para identificar cuando estamos defendiendo esa ´´esencia´´, y cuando, en su nombre, tenemos posturas rigidas, que terminan ejerciendo juicios de valor incorrecto sobre otra persona, y limitan su trabajo en nuestras comunidades.

Jesús llegó un dia para enseñarnos que la esencia del cristianismo es el amor, y que el amor al prójimo no esta desligado al amor a Dios.

Que ese Dios bueno nos dé el discernimiento para pensar primero en el prójimo, antes de juzgar y reproducir rigideces que muchas veces responden más a la historia y conveniencia de los seres humanos, que a las enseñanzas de Cristo.

 

Oración: Dios bueno, que tu amor cale en nuestros corazones, para que podamos enseñar a las próximas generaciones menos reglas, y más de la bondad y el amor que Jesús nos enseñó. Amén.
