TEMPTATION

Matthew 4:1-13

 The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’

Matthew 4:3 (NRSV)

Jesus’ first temptation was to use his status as the Son of God to satisfy his hunger without regard for his divine purpose: to command stones become bread. This temptation involves using one’s qualities for one’s own benefit, rather than putting them at the service of others.

Jesus teaches us that the bread that leads human beings to fulfillment is not the bread that is received, but the “bread” that is given, the giving of oneself to others. The trials and temptations of Jesus are also those of the ones who set out to follow him. In our effort to be faithful to the Father’s will, we cannot accept putting our needs above everything and everyone else, nor can we use power to dominate, nor live our own way, turning our backs on God's plan.

Prayer: Lord, grant us your grace and blessing so that we may be able to resist the temptations we face, just as you did in the desert. Amen.

TENTACIÓN

Mateo 4:1-13

Si eres el hijo de Dios, di que estas piedras se conviertan en pan

Mateo 4:3

La primera tentación fue la de que utilizara su calidad de Hijo de Dios para satisfacer su hambre sin tener en cuenta su designio divino: di que estas piedras se conviertan en pan.Esta tentación implica utilizar las cualidades que uno posee para el propio beneficio, en vez de ponerlas al servicio de los demás. Jesús nos enseña que el pan que lleva al ser humano a su plenitud no es el pan que se recibe, sino el “pan” que se da, la entrega de uno mismo a los demás.

Las pruebas y tentaciones de Jesús son también las de aquel que se pone en actitud de seguirle. En nuestro esfuerzo por ser fieles a la voluntad del Padre no podemos aceptar poner nuestras necesidades por encima de todo y de todos, ni servirnos del poder para dominar, y ni vivir a nuestro estilo, de espaldas al Proyecto de Dios.

Oración: Señor, danos tu gracia y bendición para que las tentaciones que tengamos seamos capaces de rechazarlas, al igual que tú en el desierto. Amén.
