WORTHY OF THE KINGDOM

Mark 10:28-31

The disciples were surprised. Aren’t the rich blessings from God, rewards for being a good person? Even today, this misconception is very common. Although many believers do enjoy great material prosperity, so many others live in dire need. Riches do not prove that someone has faith, nor do they indicate God’s favor.

Jesus assured his disciples that anyone who gave something of value for His sake would be rewarded a hundredfold in this life, though not necessarily in the same way. For example, if someone’s family rejects them for accepting Christ, they will gain a larger family of believers. Along with these rewards, however, we face persecution because the world hates God. Jesus emphasized persecution to ensure that we would not follow him out of self-interest, thinking only of the rewards.

Jesus said that, in the world to come, values will be reversed. Those who seek positions and importance here on earth will not have them in heaven. Those who are humble will be great in heaven. The corrupt condition of our society fosters confusion regarding values. Messages that tell us how to be important and to feel good bombard us, and the teachings of Jesus about serving others seems distant. However, those who serve others are best qualified to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Prayer: Beloved Father, help us to live humbly so that we may multiply the blessings that you bestow upon us every day. Amen.

MERECEDORES DEL REINO

Marcos 10:28-31

¿Qué de nosotros, que lo hemos dejado todo y te hemos seguido? —comenzó a reclamarle Pedro.

Los discípulos estaban asombrados. ¿No son las riquezas bendiciones de Dios, recompensas por ser uno bueno? Aún hoy en día este falso concepto es muy común. Aunque muchos creyentes gozan de gran prosperidad material, otros tantos viven en dura necesidad. Las riquezas no prueban que uno tiene fe, ni parcialidad de Dios.

Jesús aseguró a sus discípulos que cualquiera que diera algo de valor por su causa sería recompensado cien veces más en esta vida, aunque no necesariamente de la misma forma. Por ejemplo, si la familia de alguien lo rechaza por aceptar a Cristo, ganará una familia de creyentes más grande. Junto con estas recompensas, sin embargo, recibimos persecución porque el mundo odia a Dios. Jesús enfatizó la persecución para asegurarse que no lo siguiéramos por egoísmo, solo pensando en las recompensas.

Jesús dijo que, en el mundo venidero, los valores serán a la inversa. Los que buscan posiciones e importancia aquí en la tierra, no la tendrán en el cielo. Los que son humildes serán grandes en el cielo. La condición corrupta de nuestra sociedad alienta la confusión en los valores. Nos bombardean mensajes que nos dicen cómo ser importantes y sentirnos bien, y las enseñanzas de Jesús en cuanto a servir a otros parecen extrañas. Sin embargo, los que sirven a los demás están mejor calificados para ser grandes en el Reino de los Cielos.

Oración: Padre amado, ayúdanos a vivir con humildad para así poder multiplicar las bendiciones que tú nos regalas diariamente. Amén.
