THERE'S NO SECRET: LOVE

Acts 15:7-21

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

John 15:12 (NRSV)

Jesus had given the disciples a clear mission (the Great Commission): to take the gospel to every creature, even going beyond the boundaries of the “chosen people” of Scripture, using the tools they knew. They were to proclaim the “good news” to every nation, despite sacrifices and fears.

Teaching through coercion breeds resistance; it is perceived as an attack. In some cases, it leads to submission; in others, to silent resistance; but never to loving acceptance. The disciples had already been touched by Jesus; now they needed to go out and touch others with the Master’s message--but without becoming the Master themselves. There was no secret; love was the key: loving one another.

Loving one another involves changing our ways; accepting, respecting, and taking the first step toward the other person… And this love would guide them through the process, transform them in their “pedagogical” practice, and enable them to break free from patterns and free themselves from burdens that had been imposed on them. This passage from the Acts of the Apostles shows us traces of that transformation.

NO HAY SECRETO: AMA

Hechos 15:7-21

Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen unos a otros, como yo los he amado.

Jesús había dado a los discípulos una tarea clara (la gran comisión), la de llevar el evangelio a toda criatura; saliéndose incluso de los límites del “pueblo escogido” de las Escrituras, con las herramientas que conocían. Debían proclamar la “buena noticia” a toda nación, con sacrificios y temores.

Instruir desde la imposición genera rechazo, se recibe como un ataque. En algunos casos lleva al sometimiento, en otros a la resistencia silenciosa, pero nunca a la acogida amorosa. Los discípulos ya habían sido tocados por Jesús, ahora necesitaban salir a tocar a otros con el mensaje del Maestro, pero sin ser El Maestro. No había un secreto, el amor era la clave: amarse unos a otros.

Amarse implica cambiar los métodos; aceptar, respetar, dar el primer paso hacia el otro, hacia la otra... Y este amor les guiaría en el proceso, les transformaría en la práctica “pedagógica”, les permitiría romper esquemas, liberarse a ellos mismos de cargas que les habían sido impuestas. Este pasaje de hechos de los apóstoles nos muestra vestigios de esa transformación…
