LET US QUENCH OUR THIRST

John 7:37-39

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink

During the final days of the Festival of the Tabernacles there was a ritual dedicated to the need for water for the coming year.

When Jesus said: anyone who is thirsty … (verse 37), he was likely offering an alternative response to the ritual that was being performed. The idea of thirst here has a spiritual meaning. Verse 38 makes it clear that this water is available only to those who believe in Him. There was no way for the listeners to understand the significance of Jesus’ words.

Water and blood flowed from his sides, pierced by a spear, with deep and symbolic meaning. The blood signifies death, and the water symbolizes the life that Jesus imparts through the Spirit, releasing the love–life (the Spirit) contained within Him.

The communication of the Spirit–the very life of God–enables humanity to overcome the barrier of death. This is what Jesus means when he says, “whoever keeps my word will never taste death.”

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for the gift of eternal life that you have given us through the sacrifice of your death and resurrection. Amen.

SACIEMOS NUESTRA SED

Si alguien tiene sed venga a mí y beba

En los últimos días de la Fiesta de los Tabernáculos había un ritual relacionado con la necesidad de agua del año siguiente.

Cuando Jesús dijo: Si alguno tiene sed (v 37), probablemente estuviera dando una respuesta alternativa al ritual que se estaba celebrando. La idea de la sed tiene aquí un sentido espiritual. El versículo 38 deja claro que esta agua está disponible solamente para los creyentes en Él. Para los oyentes no había forma que conocieran el significado de las palabras de Jesús.

Agua y sangre brotaron de su costado, penetrado por una lanza, con sentido profundo y simbólico. La sangre indica la muerte, y el agua simboliza la vida que Jesús comunica por el Espíritu, liberando el amor – vida (el Espíritu) contenido en Él.

La comunicación del Espíritu, vida de Dios mismo, hace que el hombre supere la barrera de la muerte. Así lo expresa Jesús cuando afirma que Quien cumpla mi mensaje no sabrá lo que es morir.

Oración: Señor, agradecemos el regalo de vida eterna que con el sacrificio de tu muerte y resurrección nos hiciste. Amén.
