Sunday, June 7 THE MAN WITH THE PITCHER MARK 14: 12-16

Sunday, June 7

THE MAN WITH THE WATER PITCHER
MARK 14: 12-16
And he sent two of his disciples and said to them,
“Go into the city and a man will meet you
                                                   carrying a pitcher of water.
                                                                Follow him”.                       Mark 14: 13

In the liturgical calendar today’s date is reserved to celebrate and reflect upon the essence of the Eucharist, the Holy Supper for us today. In this context I’m particularly thinking of today's Gospel passage which involves a character who has always drawn my attention. I refer to the porter, a man carrying a pitcher of water whom Jesus asks his disciples to follow in order to discover the location where the last supper would be held.

I’ve mused that this person is a sort of symbol for Jesus himself. Firstly, he appears at the gathering of the disciples (God takes the initiative to manifest himself with us through Jesus Christ); he’s a water carrier, the symbol of the abundant life God gives us (Jesus is living water); he’s a simple servant (Jesus  gave this example of service to all); he’s the guide to the owner of the house where the banquet will take place (the guide implies God); and he secures the final participation in a banquet (the banquet of the kingdom of God).

Each time we come to the table of the Lord may we remember that an ordinary and anonymous person pointed the way to such a sacred moment. Let us make our lives Eucharistic, where sacredness springs forth at each footstep.

Prayer:  Lord, may each moment in communion with our neighbor be a Holy Supper for us. Amen.

el hombre del cántaro
marcos 14:12-16

Saturday, June 6 WHERE IS YOUR BROTHER? Philippians 1: 1-11

Saturday, June 6

                                                  WHERE IS YOUR BROTHER?
                                                             Philippians 1: 1-11

Be devoted to one another in fraternal love.          Romans 12:10

José María Vargas Vila is considered to be a religiously inspired novelist. In the prologue of one of his novels we find the phrase, “We find the best testimony to human fraternity written by Cain with the jawbone of an ass”.
We regret that the cited author had arrived at such a fateful and colorless conclusion, but such is not the case.
Following the sentiment of knowing oneself to be loved by another, true friendship, invoked in fraternity, is the most profound experience one can have. Pleasant memories of a Christian home; joyful occasions spent in a retreat; past years seated in the classrooms; and lastly, not the least important is when we sing in each ecclesiastic celebration “We are united in faith”. Were we united?
Fraternity is an indispensable practice to give value to life. Like the waters of the impetuous stream, human fraternity can produce an invincible force.
Our world hasn’t taken, and isn’t taking the value of this sentiment into account.  The ancient question posed by the Bible takes hold and we need to confront it: “Where is your brother?”

Prayer:  Holy God, help us to find our brothers and sisters and to love and serve you. Amen

¿DÓNDE ESTÁ TU HERMANO?
FILIPENSES 1:1-11

Amaos a los otros con amor fraternal…
Romanos 12:10

Oración: Dios Santo, ayúdanos a encontrar a nuestro hermano o a nuestra hermana y a amarte y servirte. Amén.

Friday, June 5 Earth Day AEOLUS, GOD OF WIND MARK 10: 46-52

Friday, June 5

Earth Day                                                                                                                                                          AEOLUS, GOD OF WIND
 MARK 10: 46-52
See that no one repays another with evil for evil,
but always seek after that which is good for one another and all people.

                                                                                                                        1 Thessalonians 5:15

According to mythology Aeolus was the god of the winds. In our times the power and force of this phenomena has been discovered, and today it’s referred to as wind energy. We glean little information from Bartimaeus other than he was the son of Timaeus, and an unhappy blind man who begged at the roadside. We could say he was a blind man both inwardly and outwardly.
Jesus’ presence there puts the cited protagonist in the background; but he persists, calling out for the Master’s attention.

Those involved in the encounter, Jews, adversaries, scribes, and one Pharisee began to scold the blind man for “annoying” the Messiah. A few seconds afterwards, seeing that Jesus had stopped and was listening to Bartimaeus, they changed their tactic and hypocritically said to him, “Take courage, get up, he is calling you”.
Hypocrisy takes pains to dominate the life of the church – of us – its members.
When the wind picks up we cannot board Bartimaeus’ train.
Try to bring human beings face to face with Christ, and put ourselves among them. The wind blows in one direction or another. It’s possible that someone at the next station will get off and joins us: the Church of Jesus Christ.

Prayer:  Lord, help us to be faithful to you. Amen.

Día del Medio Ambiente
EOLO, DIOS DEL VIENTO
MARCOS 10:46-52

I Tesalonicenses 5:15

Oración: Ayúdanos, Señor a serte fieles. Amén.

Thursday, June 4 FIRST LIFE, THEN LAW Mark 2: 23-28

Thursday, June 4
                                                        FIRST LIFE, THEN LAW
                                                                   Mark 2: 23-28
                                                                Jesus said to them,
the Sabbath was made for man,
not man for the Sabbath.                  Mark 2: 27

We’re constantly confronted with situations in which we have to decide what is good and what is bad. This is easy to resolve according to Jewish tradition where it would be sufficient to turn to the Law of Moses as the preeminent authority. But in this passage Jesus is acting as advocate for his disciples who were gathering heads of grain on the Sabbath, and his words surpass eloquence in clarifying what is truly most important. He reminds the Pharisees that the will of God cannot be reduced to certain prescriptions or mandates, and he cites Holy Scripture, supposedly dominated by these same sages, according to human criteria, to make his point. If David, the most exemplary king of Israelite history, had transgressed the law for humanitarian reasons, why couldn’t his disciples do the same?

Occasionally we lose this important reference point, which is life, and we superimpose blind compliance to certain norms. So, analyze for yourself to see if our actions today have confused compliance with God’s will with the application of narrow and inert rules invented by others of some indeterminate passed century; or perhaps more recent norms, but equally lacking human sensibility, doing nothing more than to impede the spiritual and material development of those around us. It’s time to give priority to all that lifts life and hope, and remove all that implies narrow-mindedness and constriction.

Prayer:  Loving God, assist us so that we can interpret your will in these times. Amen.

Vida, primero; Ley, después
Marcos 2:23-28

Wednesday, June 3 DON’T THROW MORE FUEL ON THE FIRE PROVERBS 15: 1-5

Wednesday, June 3
DON’T THROW MORE FUEL ON THE FIRE
                                                            PROVERBS 15: 1-5
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.
                                                                                                                          Proverbs 15:1
How many times do we find conflictive situations that could have had a happy ending if only anger, violence, or intolerance hadn't stymied or prolonged them, combining to impede an understanding? According to this proverb a friendly response would be sufficient to extinguish anger, which is something we well know is hardly the beginning of a series of calamities that threaten peace and harmony. Don’t answer evil with evil; on the contrary, answer evil actions with civil actions as the Gospel teaches. The perpetrators of evil are thus silenced by the break in the cycle of violence. Naturally, we are talking about something contrary to our human nature which always places us at the side of those who are perceived as being right.
Brothers and sisters, it would be good to ask ourselves – no matter whether it’s today or some future occasion we’re referring to – What answer would we make to uncomfortable situations? If we want to fulfill the will of God we shouldn't answer as any other person would. Remember that Christ’s peace resides in our hearts, and this is sufficient to act as propitiators of reconciliation and forgiveness. Our duty is “not to throw fuel on the fire”, rather to diffuse it with the water of life that God has gifted us through the example of his son, Jesus Christ.

Prayer:  God of goodness, may we always have the precise answer for situations of violence that flare up around us; an answer of peace and love. Amen.

No echar más leña al fuego
Proverbios 15:1-5

La respuesta amable calma la ira;
la respuesta grosera aumenta el enojo.
                                                            Proverbios 15:1

Tuesday, June 2 Anniversary of the IPR in Placetas IN PURSUIT OF THE MASTER MARK 8: 31-38

Tuesday, June 2
Anniversary of the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Placetas
                                                   IN PURSUIT OF THE MASTER
                                                                   MARK 8: 31-38
…He said to them, if anyone wishes to come after me,
he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.        Mark 8: 34

Anyone would say that such a proposal was approaching true craziness. Later, the Apostle Paul qualified craziness as the Gospel of Jesus Christ itself. Nevertheless, this negation of the self, the egotistical I which makes us insensible or even evil - in the context of a sense of community or of love and justice - is what makes Jesus’ exhortation and example transcendent in history. The Spirit of God would have gestures of devotion, generosity, service and altruism as the signs of our Lord’s instruction; and thus it was that the manifestation of the kingdom of God, supposedly an ideal less than “logical,” burst into history. What moved the world in Jesus’ or even our own day wasn’t promises of power and riches; it was the vocation of taking up our cross, that which weighs heavily upon us, makes us afraid, which tortures us even unto death, and thusly burdened to go in pursuit of Jesus.

Let us not distort the Gospel of Jesus Christ by making our lives a constant race in pursuit of our own well-being or pleasure. Let us surrender, as Jesus did, in service and saintliness to God, to mark a true difference in history, to live in communion with our neighbor and all creation, which is to live in communion with God. This is the true meaning of a spiritual life.

Prayer:  Blessed God, you challenge us to live differently, changed according to your will through Jesus. Help us to carry our crosses, to respond to Jesus’ call, and to follow him. Amen.

Aniversario de la IPR de Placetas

En pos del Maestro
Marcos 8:31-38

Monday, June 1 International Children’s Day THE KINGDOM BELONGS TO SUCH AS THESE LUKE 18: 15-17

Monday, June 1
                                                     International Children’s Day
THE KINGDOM BELONGS TO SUCH AS THESE
                                                                LUKE 18: 15-17

But Jesus called for them saying, “Let the children come to me,
                                                        and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.        Luke 18: 16

One of the many moving and tender verses of our beloved José Martí to his son says, “In the morning my dear little boy wakes me with a big kiss.” Would that such a scene be sufficient to move us to recall being wrapped in a cloud of pleasant sensations, of overflowing filial love to the point of inspiring poetry! Today, on International Children’s Day, we should shower that same tenderness upon all of our sons and daughters, that same affection and love.

Today is a special day of thanks to God for everything we devote to and all that we learn from childhood. But the tranquility of the child who wakes his father with a kiss in a familiar and safe environment is unfortunately not the norm for thousands of children who are born and raised in hostile environments. Today is an appropriate day to renew our commitment with God, to favor justice and consolation for so many children near and far who require help to transform their nightmarish reality into one of happiness. And that’s what Jesus always wanted; and that’s why he reproached those who hampered the children from coming to him.

We give thanks to God for the security and the rights Cuban children enjoy. We ask God that efforts may continue worldwide to make childhood a time of happiness and security, full of dreams to fulfill.

Prayer:  Lord, may children always be an example of your kingdom. May we be like them! Amen.

Día Internacional de la Infancia

De los tales es el reino
Lucas 18:15-17
