PRIORITIES
MATTHEW 8: 18-22

Jesus said to him, let the dead bury their dead.
Matthew 8:22

A little while ago I participated in a course where a consultant imparted the subject of how to make better use of our time. He took out a bottle with a wide mouth and a tray of large stones and asked, “How many stones do you believe fit in this bottle?” And he began putting in stones until he filled it.
“Is it full?” he asked.
“Yes,” we answered.
“Not so,” he replied, and put a pail with gravel in it on the table. He put part of the gravel in the bottle and began to shake it. The smaller stones penetrated the spaces left by the larger stones.
He smiled and asked again, “Is it full?” This time we replied, “Perhaps not.”
And he placed a pail of sand on the table. Then he asked, “Is it full?”
“No!” we shouted
He took out a jar of water which he began to pour into the bottle, and it was still not full.
“Well, what has this demonstrated to us?” he asked. No one knew how to answer exactly. “What this lesson teaches us is that if we don’t put the large stones in first you will never be able to put them in afterwards.”
What are the large stones in your life? Are they your health; your spouse; your work; your meetings; power or money? Without doubt, God is that great stone, the firm rock we should put in first place in our lives. The rest will in time occupy its proper place.

Prayer:  Lord, today we ask for the ability to discern the true priorities in our lives. In your name we pray. Amen.

PRIORIDADES
MATEO 8: 18-22

Entonces preguntó: “¿Está lleno?”, “No”, gritamos.

Saturday, August 6 TURNED OFF OR OUTSIDE THE SERVICE AREA EPHESIANS 5:1-20

Saturday, August 6
TURNED OFF OR OUTSIDE THE SERVICE AREA
EPHESIANS 5:1-20

“This is why it is said:
Wake up sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Ephesians 5:14

Every time I try to talk on my cell phone out comes this message: “The phone you are calling is either turned off or outside the service area.” And a great feeling of impotence takes hold of me. I get the same reaction from some people who live the way this message expresses: turned off or outside the coverage area. I am speaking of those persons who are indifferent to nearby situations, who don’t like to commit to work in the community, who prefer to live as though in a bubble, without participating in anything that might drag them away from their comfort zone or immobility.

God invites us to awaken from our lethargy and to always be “connected” to his kingdom of righteousness. Calling ourselves Christians is worthless if we’re not in tune with what happens around us, or if we’re unavailable to those who need us.

Prayer:  Forgive us Lord when we live like sleep-walkers, distanced from your call. May we always be attentive to the needs we see around us. Help us to be connected to you in every moment of our existence. Amen.

APAGADO O FUERA DEL ÁREA DE COBERTURA
EFESIOS 5:1-20

Friday, August 5 PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER COLOSSIANS 4:2-3

Friday, August 5
PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER
COLOSSIANS 4:2-3

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Colossians 4:2

It’s interesting to note how many passages in the Holy Scriptures speak of prayer. Having barely opened the Bible, we read in chapter 4, verse 26 of the Book of Genesis: “At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.”

The examples are numerous: Job crying out for fullness of life; Daniel, who prays three times a day; and David, who always implores with all his heart. On the mountain we see Elijah crying out for his life as well.

Later, in the New Testament, we find Paul and Silas praying in jail. What else do these texts teach us if not the necessity of prayer? We can be certain that of all things that God has stressed in his Word, he wants prayer to occupy an important place in our lives. If there are so many examples of prayer to God it’s because we need them.

Praying brings us much closer to God. Prayer is the cry of the believer who struggles; prayer is a Christian’s breath, consolation, and strength. A prayerful life would fulfill our spiritual need to be much closer to God.

Prayer:  Lord, grant that we may be humble, conscientious and patient; help us to be steadfast in the power and the trust that prayer to you provides. Help us also so that we do not use prayer solely in moments of need. We ask you that you give us a prayerful life. Amen.

PERSEVERAD EN LA ORACIÓN
COLOSENSES 4:2-3

Perseverad en la oración,
velando en ella con acción de gracias
Colosenses 4:2

Thursday, August 4 BUT GROW IN GRACE 2 PETER 3:17-18

Thursday, August 4
BUT GROW IN GRACE
2 PETER 3:17-18

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.

2 Peter 3:18

It says in the Bible that faith should grow in abundance, in constancy and in love. It is important that our love become more intense, and especially, more practical; that it may influence each of our thoughts, our words, and our works.  Another important element is to grow in humility; and with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, we should grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Those who do not grow in the knowledge of Jesus refuse to be blessed, since knowing him constitutes eternal life and progression in the knowledge that becomes happiness.

If you don’t wish to know him more deeply, then you don’t love him, because love always exclaims: “closer and ever closer.” Don’t remain satisfied without a growing knowledge of humility, in his work, in his death, in his resurrection, in his glorious intercession, and in his future return.

An increase of love toward Jesus and a better understanding of his love for us is one of the best tests of growth in grace.

Prayer:  Lord, in our daily living, may we always feel the imperious necessity of being beneath your grace, in order to be worthy of it. Amen.

MAS CRECED EN LA GRACIA
2 PEDRO 3 :17-18

Wednesday, August 3 Anniversary of the Church “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” (Remedios) BEING A COMMUNITY MATTHEW 9:35-38

Wednesday, August 3
Anniversary of the Church “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” (Remedios)

BEING A COMMUNITY
MATTHEW 9:35-38

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,
because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a pastor.

Matthew 9:36

A few days ago I passed by a park and took a seat on one of its benches in the shade of a flamboyán tree. In the past, whenever I’d done this, the children’s games and laughter, the lovers’ smiles, and the peacefulness of elderly people had always entertained me. But on this occasion, the park didn’t have this magic, because the people gathered there were pursuing a single objective: to connect on their cell phones to some family member or friend abroad. I remembered Jesus’ compassion upon observing the multitudes. I asked myself when that park had ceased being a magical place to socialize or chat directly with one another about baseball or some other issue of national consequence. Arriving home I asked my sons, “Where do the boys and girls play now?  Where do people fall in love?” They laughed at me and answered, “Mom, now all this can be done just as well by telephone or computer.”

I understand that for many families the possibility of communicating with family members who have emigrated is very important, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that our human relationships are more than text messages.

Through Jesus, we learned the importance of being a community, of visiting the sick, of accompanying the needy, of sharing bread and fish with friends.  In short, let us not become scattered and distant; nothing can ever substitute for the richness of a human relationship, as close and as direct as that which God has with us.

Prayer:  Our God, thank you for your closeness. Help us to be evermore an image of you, becoming more humane and closer to one another. Amen.

Aniversario de la Iglesia  “Rev. Evaristo Collazo” (Remedios)

SER COMUNIDAD
MATEO 9:35-38

Tuesday, August 2 THE RED ROSE MATTHEW 8:23-27

Tuesday, August 2
THE RED ROSE
MATTHEW 8:23-27

Then he replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and waves, and it was completely calm.
Matthew 8:26

One day while walking in the street I noticed some dark clouds gathering in the sky, and it began to rain in torrents. I rapidly sought shelter, and that rain became a downpour. This frightened me, and I began to pray, asking God to assist me in overcoming that situation. Then I noticed a small red rose, half withered and bent over by the large water drops falling upon it and by the strong wind.  Despite everything, the flower didn’t break; rather, it tolerated the battering of the rain and each of its blows with incredible strength. The little rose withstood the punishment without yielding. When the rain had passed, I noticed with surprise how the small and fragile rose was still intact with its upright stem facing the sky, proudly displaying its beautiful petals as a trophy of victory over that storm.

All this made me reflect upon my life, having observed how the defenseless rose fought to stay upright before the storm. I remembered the difficulties I’d had in my life and how many times I had felt that I couldn’t go on.

Since that moment, I don’t let anything frighten or discourage me. Every time I feel myself weakening, I remember that little red rose that showed me how strong I am and how much God cares for me, despite sending me storms that lash my life.

Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for caring for me even amid the storms. Amen.

Monday, August 1 JOY, EVEN IN SUFFERING LUKE 9:20-24

JOY, EVEN IN SUFFERING
LUKE 9:20-24

“The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

Luke 9:22
The truth is that our human sufferings do not need to be an obstacle to the joy and peace we so desire, rather they can become a means to them in the midst of our trials. The great secret of the spiritual life of Christ’s followers is that all that we may experience, whether it be joy or sadness, health or infirmity, can be part of the journey toward the full realization of our humanity, our human condition.

It’s not difficult to say to ourselves, “All that is good and beautiful leads us to the glory of God’s sons and daughters;” but it’s very hard to say, “Do we not know that everyone needs to suffer in order to thus enter our glory?”

Nevertheless, true carefulness means the willingness to mutually assist each other in the process of converting our affliction into the entrance to a life of joyfulness.

Prayer:  Lord, when I’m tempted to worry about something, help me to trust in you to redeem daily life; when I feel cornered I will seek out your mercy for my liberation. Amen.

ALEGRÍA, AÚN EN EL SUFRIMIENTO
LUCAS 9:20-24
