A QUADRUPLE RENEWAL

2 Corinthians 4:13-18

. . . though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

            The apostle Paul tells us his interior being, despite physical wear and tribulations, was renewing day by day. Some authors detail something of what this renewal means, mentioning four stages that could describe the evolution of the moral and spiritual development: cleansing, growth, awakening, and presentation.

            Many times, Christianity focuses overmuch on cleansing, translated into certain “purity codes” that do not generally reflect the moral ideals of Jesus who pointed to our interior attitudes (Matthew 6-7), whose goal is not moral perfection but love. Growth is the process of maturity that, even in the midst of the limitations our environment imposes, does not allow our ego to cloud testimony. Awakening is the phase of spiritual experience that makes us overcome the eminence of the self as something separate from divinity. It should be the goal of all devotion. The purpose of this awakening is not personal perfection, but surrender: love and union with God.

            From this point, presenting oneself happens naturally, which means bringing our hearts and minds to the suffering and real problems of the world in commitment and serious concern for justice and peace for all.

 

Prayer: Take our lives, Lord, in an integral part of renewal, necessary to be witness that abounds for your glory. Amen.

Una renovación cuádruple

2 Corintios 4:13-18

...Y aunque por fuera nos vamos desgastando, por dentro nos vamos renovando de día en día

2 Corintios 4:16

            El apóstol Pablo nos dice que su ser interior, pese al desgaste físico y las tribulaciones, se renovaba cada día. Algunos autores detallan algo de lo que significa esta renovación al mencionar cuatro etapas que pueden describir la evolución del desarrollo moral y espiritual: limpieza, crecimiento, despertar y presentación.

            Muchas veces el cristianismo se enfoca demasiado en la limpieza, traducida en ciertos “códigos de pureza” que por lo general no reflejan los ideales morales de Jesús, quien apuntaba a nuestras actitudes internas (Mateo 6–7), cuya meta no es una perfección moral sino el amor. El crecimiento es el proceso de madurez que, aún en medio de las limitaciones que nuestro medio impone, no deja que nuestro ego empañe el testimonio. Despertar es la fase de las experiencias espirituales que nos hace superar la eminencia del yo, como algo separado de la divinidad. Debe ser la meta de toda devoción. El propósito de este despertar no es la perfección personal sino la entrega, el amor y la unión con Dios. Desde este punto, ocurre con naturalidad el presentarse, que significa llevar nuestro corazón y nuestra mente al sufrimiento y los problemas reales del mundo, en compromiso y preocupación sincera por la justicia y la paz para todos.

 

Oración: Toma nuestras vidas, Señor, en una integralidad de renovación necesaria para ser testimonio que sobreabunde para tu gloria.  Amén.
